“What are you talking about?” I asked carefully.

“Do you honestly believe I skipped having the wedding of the century because I couldn’t wait to be married to the love of my life?” She sounded disappointed. As If I should've known her better.

No. She absolutely wouldn't have. I’d wondered at the time, but she and Kane had been all over each other back then. I thought maybe he’d changed her in some way because he was the one for her.

She’d found out she was pregnant.

“You lured him into marriage?”

She was unbelievable.

“I couldn’t be knocked up with a fatherless baby. Look how well that worked out for you. People still talk behind your back." She behaved as if I was the inconvenience.

That Penelope was.

That Kane was.

We were just pawns in her game.

“You’re not a problem-solver like I am, JoJo. I shouldn’t have let you influence me back then, and I won’t make the mistake of allowing you to persuade me again.”

“Why not me? If you hate me so much, wouldn’t it be better to be rid of me?” I threw my hands up. None of her actions made sense. None.

“If you’re dead, she gets your assets.” She was far too calm. Too detached.

My lips parted in stunned silence.

Alma grinned. “Now you see where this is going.”

My will stated if something happened to Penelope, then Alma would inherit everything I had. I needed Kane to change that immediately.

“Once Penelope is out of the way, then what? You kill me?”

Her features shaped into an appalled expression. “What kind of barbarian do you take me for? I would never.” Then she grinned. “But accidents happen.” She shrugged as she stepped closer. “And since your heir is incapacitated, I’ll be in control of everything you have.”

I swallowed hard. I’d forgotten that too.

Because all of those things meant nothing to me. My family had been most important.

The woman standing before me wasn’t the sister I loved.

Maybe that person had only been a figment of my imagination. I longed to hold on to her memory, but it was impossible when faced with reality.

“The first thing I need to do is shut down that money-suck your stupid foundation is.”

No.

She’d destroy my life’s work with the swipe of a pen. There would be no shelter for the homeless or water for the thirsty.

She canted her head. “Hmm . . . maybe that’s second. That medical facility is a terribly costly expense. Wasted money. And since I’m fiscally responsible for protecting your assets, I’ll cut that funding first.”

I lunged.

Rage burned through me like she'd thrown a lit match on gasoline.

Alma grinned as if I’d done exactly as she wanted.

She stepped out of the way, and my momentum carried me past her.
