I’d barely taken a step when he spoke.

“I’m not leaving you.” My nose tingled. “And you better not leave me again either.”

“I thought I died.”

His voice was so pained it nearly broke me.

“I finally have the family I want, only to have it ripped away. Karma, right?” he choked out.

He tried to smile bitterly, but even his face didn’t want to cooperate. I wasn’t sure if the pained look was from almost losing us or the physical hurt.

Either way, it appeared to torment him.

“You weren’t going to give us up that easily.” My words were watery.

My unstable emotions were the last thing I needed.

I was so glad to have him back, I could hardly take it.

“Penelope?” he asked.

I covered his hand with mine. “She’s stable.”

He nodded and closed his eyes. “I want to stay. So tired.”

“I’ll be here when you wake up.” I kissed his forehead. “I’m not giving you up so easily either.”

“Is he awake?” Whitley strode into the room

“I heard you in hell.” Kane sounded as if he were drifting off.

His eyes stayed closed. But he was here. He was going to be fine.

And he was still my Kane.

“You’re going to hear me out here too.” Beneath Whitley’s tough exterior was a worried expression. He hadn’t left the hospital in hours, concerned for his friend.

“Barn, maybe you should get that nurse to knock me out with some pain meds,” Kane mumbled.

“Have her get me some too.” Whitley dropped into a chair. “Are you determined to bury me in work?”

“Whatever works.” Sleep was quickly taking Kane under.

“I love you,” I whispered.

“Love you more.” Kane’s head lulled to the side. And he was out.

“Sure. Go back to sleep and leave us to deal with everything.” Through the sarcasm punched a note of relief. “Do you have any idea why he texted Alma? He’s the one shot and in the hospital, but the cops are giving me a hard time about him. Like he instigated the entire thing.”

“I sent the text.”

His head snapped toward me. “You?”

“I have no idea where my phone is.” I shrugged. “We’d had a bad day. I was angry and wanted answers.”

“And you thought seeing Alma was a good idea? You filed a restraining order against her.” He scrubbed his forehead with his hand.

“I forgot about that.”
