“Where’s your baby?” Damn it.

“Baby?” Huxley’s voice took on a quality I’d never heard before.

No. As long as he never knew about Ella, everything would be okay. Why? Why did he have to find out? What hope I had remaining dwindled to a speck.

The blindfold was ripped from my eyes. Huxley was the only thing in my field of vision. I blinked a few times to adjust to the light hanging directly overhead.

He grabbed my chin to the point there’d be bruises later. “Whatbaby?”

I stared into his eyes. I remembered the first time I’d looked into them. How kind and playful they’d been. And when he’d asked me to marry him, they’d been so hopeful and full of promise. The first time we’d made love. The sheen that had covered them as we came together.

None of that was anywhere to be found. This man’s eyes were monstrous. Deadly. Devoid of any kind of compassion.

“What baby?”

He yanked so hard on the fabric that the back of my head caused it to rip in two.

“Answer me.”

“There’s no baby.” My throat was scratchy, but I sounded sure. I’d been so malnourished, I’d just looked bloated while I was pregnant. He hadn’t known.

“Don’t lie to me, sweetheart.”

“I wouldn’t,” I said, widening my eyes. I so would about this. I’d die before I led him to my daughter.

“You might’ve forgotten where your loyalties lie. Who takes care of you.”

“Never. I’d never forget.”

Huxley inched his face closer to mine. His breath hit my skin in hot blasts. “I’ll remind you anyway. As soon as this paying customer is done with you,” he growled against my mouth. “And sweetheart? If I find out you’re hiding our baby from me, you’ll wish I’d kill you.”

His lips were rough as they captured mine. I forced myself to kiss him back with eagerness. Whatever I had to do to distract him, I would.

When our mouths broke apart, his smile made me shudder. “Don’t try to use your body as a weapon against me.” I stopped breathing for a moment. “I know you better than anyone else. You haven’t kissed me like that in years.”

“Being apart made me realize a lot of things.”

“Oh, yeah?”

“Yeah,” I said softly, blinking up at him. “It’s hard out there.” I lifted my chin toward the ceiling. “You make life so easy.”

He leaned closer and traced his finger down the cut running along the center of my body. I went rigid at the fresh pain. “I know you like being a slut. Like all the attention. But remember one thing. You are my whore. Mine. I can give and I can take away.”

“I thought you’d want me first,” I whispered, lowering my eyes.

Huxley fisted my chin, a glitter of triumph in his green pools. “Is that what’s the matter? You wanted Daddy?” He kissed my forehead in a strangely affectionate gesture. “Don’t worry. You’ll have him soon enough.”

I breathed out a sigh of relief. I’d distracted him from Ella, at least for the moment.

“Continue.” He stepped out of the way, and my eyes landed on the woman who held a blade in her hand.

“The blindfold,” she said in a panic. But it was too late. I’d seen her. And I knew exactly who she was.
