We struggled for control.

The edge of the blade cut into Trish’s neck. The woman took advantage. She swept my legs out from under me with a swift kick. The cold, hard concrete jolted me when I landed on my ass. I hadn’t let go of the woman, so the force of my fall brought her down with me.

The monster had stopped moving the knife, and I breathed a small sigh of relief. Until the barrel of the gun pressed into my temple.

“We could do a lot with this one, Huxley,” she purred as she studied me.

He tilted his head to the side, considering the possibility as if he didn’t have a knife to Trish’s throat.

Was this for real?

My eyes locked on Trish, who refused to look at me. She stared into space as these two made their business plans. What have they done to you? When we got out of this, I would never let her go.

“Huxley,” she said in a faraway voice.

“I know you need me, sweetheart,” he answered, stroking her cheek with his free hand.

Trish was in a trance. I felt like I was watching some demented horror show. Did she want him? And how could he be threatening to kill her with one hand and be so gentle with the other?

She tilted her head back, looking at him with admiration and . . . longing? His lips curved up, though the knife followed the elongation of her neck.

“Daddy’s going to take care of you.”

She whimpered with need, and my stomach turned. I didn’t care if he’d brainwashed her into wanting him, I would get her away from this sick monster.

“I want to touch you.” Her voice was melodic, mesmerizing.

“You know the only places you’re allowed to touch.” He pointed at his lips and cupped his crotch.

Oh, Jesus.

I’d only witnessed a few minutes of this and was desperate for it to end. I couldn’t imagine the years of hell she’d been through.

Trish offered her mouth to him. I moved to get up when the gun barrel pressed deeper into my skin.

Huxley glared at me, just long enough for Trish to make eye contact. She was with me. Thank God, she was with me.

“Huxley.”

Her voice drew his attention back to her face. She gave him a serene smile but was otherwise still. Despite a gun pointed at my head, I marveled at how she worked him. Bright Side knew exactly what she was doing, though I wasn’t sure what the end game was. I trusted her. Decided to follow her lead.

“Lower the gun, Allegra.”

Huxley jerked his head toward the new arrival to the party. The sound of the hammer of the gun cocking back sent a wave of unease through my chest.

“Thank Christ you’re here, Wilson. These two sick fucks tortured that poor girl.”

What the hell? This bitch was trying to pin this on me?

“You’ve got backup now.” Officer Wilson trained his gun on me, though he kept his gaze on Huxley.

I’d fucked up trusting him. He obviously knew this woman. Was this by-the-book cop in on it? And where the hell were Drew, Daniel, and Patrick?

“Let us go, and nobody has to die,” Huxley said. His calm was unnerving, unwavering. He seemed to thrive in duress.

Officer Wilson flicked his chin toward the stairs. “Go. I’ll take care of him.” He gestured in my direction with his gun.

Momentarily taken aback, Huxley didn’t move. Like it was too easy. Was Officer Wilson really going to let him go? The gun pointed at my head said he absolutely was.
