“When you’re my age, you’ll be able to too.”

We approached the window. Trish’s eyes darted back and forth between my dad and me.

“Hello, love. I’m back again.” Ah, yes. My father, the consummate flirt. I rolled my eyes.

Her face tinged with a pink blush. “Hi, Mills. Good to see you again.”

“I take it you know my son Andrew.”

She nodded, her gaze landing on me. “I do.” Her voice took on a husky tone that had me shifting on my feet.

“Hi, Bright Side.”

I glanced at Dad, whose brow rose, but he said nothing.

“Both of you want to be surprised?” Trish asked, getting down to business.

“Yes,” Dad and I said in unison, much to her amusement.

“You mean you let her pick when you come?” I asked, incredulous.

“Yep.” Dad surveyed the area around us, unsurprised that the two of us were so alike.

I tried to get a peek of Trish in the galley, starting when I noticed what was sitting on the counter. The sign in front of it readWhite Velvet Cakein a handwritten script. It wasn’t the cake name that had my attention. The frosting was a crimson and had tiny white elephants.Cute. Very Trish. Reminded me of . . .didn’t I wear my tie that looks like that recently?I smiled.

“We’ll take the rest of those,” I said when she appeared back in the window.

She gave me a soft smile as she gathered them. She’d baked those for me. Thank God I’d made it by.

“Not so busy today?” she asked, carefully placing the wrapped up cakes in a box.

“Very. I’ve just straightened out my priorities.”

Trish let out a barely audible gasp and kept her focus on packing up our food. Dad dug his finger into the small of my back, nodding toward her.

When I didn’t say anything, my father took the liberty for me. “You’ll have to forgive my son. For being a fancy-pants lawyer, he can be dense sometimes.” He gave me a knowing look, yet there was nothing but love in his eyes.

“We all have our moments.” My chest puffed out a little more when Trish took up for me.

“On Sundays, we go to Dino’s for pizza at four o’clock. If my daughter feels like gracing us with her presence, she joins us. Either way, there’s plenty of room at the table. Bring a friend if you want. Preferably one who’s single and likes old men with gray hair.”

Her smile set me on fire. And even though I wanted to strangle my dad, I loved that he’d been able to bring that ray out in her.

“Is he always this persuasive?” she asked me.

“Always,” I confirmed.

“You make it hard to say no.” She pursed her lips as though she was put out, but her smile won. “I don’t know my friend’s preference for hair color or if she likes older men.”

“She’ll like them by the end of the meal,” Dad promised with a wink. Oh, God. Something else I did like him.

“Or she’ll run for her life,” I said quietly.

“You obviously didn’t inherit my charm.” He turned his attention back to Trish, utterly debonair. “I’ll be by again before Sunday, but we’ll see you then.”

“Go get us a seat, and I’ll be over in a minute.” I handed Dad one of our bags of food.

“Don’t mess up what I’ve just done,” he said, flashing one last grin at Trish.
