Something vibrated against my rear and I jumped, nearly hitting my head on the ceiling of the cab.

“Sorry. That’s my phone,” Andrew said.

He made no move to answer, the space too crowded. I clenched my rear as the vibration continued for the duration of the call. As soon as it ended, it began again.

“Must be important,” I said.

“Whatever it is, it can wait.”

After a final buzz, I relaxed, even as I tried not to put all my weight on Andrew.

Holt pulled his own cell out of his front pocket. A second later, the vibration began again. I yelped and clenched again. He snickered. I tried to be serious, but a smile won until I was finally laughing.

“Holt,” Andrew admonished.

“Couldn’t help myself,” Holt said as he pressed something on his phone again.

The vibration continued. Andrew’s brother was like a big kid. I was amused by his harmless prank, but Andrew was tense beneath me.

“Cut it out.” He smacked Holt on the arm, and I had the visual image of the two of them when they were younger. I doubted very much was different in this scenario.

Mr. Dixon appeared half amused, half annoyed, and much relieved when the truck pulled to a stop at Ed’s Garage. Andrew opened the door, and I hopped out, landing on crumbling pavement.

The men were right behind me and in no time had my food truck unhooked from the wrecker. Ed and Holt discussed how to fix it while I went inside the truck to see what I could scrounge up for dinner. Andrew followed me.

Wordlessly, I gathered the makings of a meal. He helped me pack it up to take wherever we ended up eating. I grabbed the bank box and tip jar and tucked it under my arm.

“Think I can get a redo?” he asked as we filed out of the truck.

“On the date?”

“Yeah,” he clarified. “Just the two of us for dinner next time?”

I waited until he was beside me. We moved in step toward the garage. “I suppose that would be okay.”

He tried to hide his pleasure. “Tomorrow?” he asked hopefully.

“Maybe later this week. I’m not exactly sure how tomorrow is going to be with the truck down and everything.” I shifted the stack of cardboard containers from one arm to another.

“What about Saturday? That way you won’t have to worry about work the next day,” he suggested.

“Let me make sure nothing is going on, but that sounds good.”

Andrew held the door open to the front reception area of the garage. “I’ll come by tomorrow, and you can let me know.”

In some respects, I felt pressured, and therefore, reluctant. But mostly, I felt cared for. And even that was a strange emotion. But from the minute I had problems with Delores, Andrew had sought to find me help. Without me asking. Three men had gone out of the way to help me, simply because Andrew had asked. It was wonderful . . . and a little overwhelming.

“Thanks for dinner, love.”Mr. Dixon patted his stomach.

He, Holt, Andrew, and I stood on the sidewalk outside of Ed’s Garage.

“You got more than you bargained for on this date,” Holt teased. “Bet you won’t turn Andrew down again . . . just in case you get another three for the price of one.”

I cringed. He hadn’t meant anything by three for the price of one, but it brought on thoughts I didn’t want to think. I shoved them down. I’d had a wonderful time with the Dixons.
