The ladder retracted. What is he doing?

“Walsh said if you’re gonna fall, he wants it to be a short trip.”

Crazy bastards.

“I’d rather get on the right side of this ladder.”

“I’m here to make sure you do . . . eventually.” He clamped a hand on my leg.

I wasn’t going anywhere even if I had to let go with my hands.

Because these guys wouldn’t let me down.

I swung my other leg up. Burke held it tight until the ladder was just above the deck of the truck.

“Let go,” I said.

“Hang on a sec.”

Walsh and Rivera supported my back, and Burke released my legs when he was sure they had me.

“Thanks.” I took off in a desperate search for Pepper. There were two ambulances. Lincoln and Beau had the dogs from downstairs corralled. What are they doing here?

I didn’t care. I was just grateful they were.

I fought my way through the small crowd to a stretcher. The doors to the ambulance beside it closed.

Pepper was lifeless, covered in soot. It was too dark to see if she was breathing.

I threw off my mask and leaned over her.

“Sir, we have to get her to the hospital.” One of the paramedics I’d seen before calmed me with his hand on my shoulder.

“How bad is it?”

He didn’t answer.

“I’m going.”

“Only family allowed.”

“I am her family,” I growled as they put her in the ambulance.

“Sorry, sir, I need to take her now.” Damn it.

The dogs.

Ash, Muffy, and Sadie.

I needed to make sure the dogs were okay.

“Take care of her,” I said gruffly, allowing them to close the back doors.

Helplessly, I watched them take off with sirens blaring, torn in three directions. Those two women would want me here.

Since most of the dogs were okay in my siblings’ care, I looked for the three in the worst shape. Ash had barely been breathing. Muffy and Sadie weren’t much better.

I had to get them to Dr. Lyons.
