“Do they know who the people were?”

Did they have families? Was there someone out there still looking for them? Still hoping?

“He didn’t say.”

I pressed up on my toes and brushed my lips across his. I could see that Teague was frustrated but needed to get to work. I so hated that he had to work for his horrible father. “I’ll see you later.”

He seemed hesitant to leave yet resigned to do what was necessary. With a hug for Miss Adeline and Vivian, then a fist bump for Daniel, he disappeared out the back door.

“We were going to come see you this afternoon,” I said, dusting my hands down my overalls.

“Beat you to it.” Vivian almost skipped over and flopped down on the desk. Millie nosed between her legs and got exactly what she wanted: a head scratch. “And turns out we’re dog people. Who knew?”

“If you weren’t, we wouldn’t like you,” Miss Adeline said.

I bit my lip so as not to laugh. She wasn’t lying.

“We have a proposition for you.”

Vivian snickered, and Daniel’s face turned red. I had a suspicion not many people had the ability to do that to him.

“What he’s trying to say is we have an idea.” His wife attempted to bail him out.

I glanced at Miss Adeline to gauge if she had any clue about whatever they were up to. She appeared as caught off guard as I was.

He scowled. Then again, he always did.

“We’ve acquired our building.” He bent to pet Muffy, seeming more comfortable around the dogs than he had been when we’d dropped the others off at their home.

And the whole building? I couldn’t begin to compute how much that must have cost. Plus, they seemed to have money left over.

It was mind-boggling.

“The bottom floor had a fitness area and some meeting rooms and some other stuff.” Vivian twirled her finger in a whoop-de-do motion. “In all the time I’ve lived there, I’d never checked any of it out.”

“Why would you when we have everything we need upstairs?” Daniel asked innocently.

They probably did have a fitness room and whatever else in that ginormous apartment. And it didn’t even matter to them. I bet if we wanted to use it, we wouldn’t have to ask.

“Anyway.” Vivian rolled her eyes, though the two of them seemed to be in sync as they laid out their plans. “We’re slowly renovating as our family moves in and hadn’t really decided what we want to do with other parts of the building.”

“We won’t be needing the community amenities any longer.” Daniel finally joined his wife by the desk.

Miss Adeline was suspiciously quiet as she listened.

“We’d like to have a second location of Grey Paws downstairs.” Vivian beamed when the grand plan finally came out.

I looked at Miss Adeline, who was as wide-eyed as I felt. We had more than we could do here. And while I appreciated their generosity, we couldn’t stretch ourselves any further with a second location. Not without help.

Although, at the moment wewereoperating in two locations.

“We’ve attracted a lot of attention walking the dogs,” Vivian said. “In fact, we have the phone numbers of a few potential adopters. And a partnership with Paths of Purpose would be a fantastic program.”

I hadn’t had time to go speak to the woman who runs the facility. That should move up the to-do list because I agreed. The dogs and the residents could benefit greatly from one another.

In my head, I couldn’t figure out the logistics of the program. Who would oversee it? Would the dogs come back to the rescue every evening? How could we run that when we barely had time to do what was needed here?

“We’ve overwhelmed you.” Uncertainty formed on Vivian’s face.
