“Just get it over with.”

Lincoln’s name flashed across my screen when I picked up my phone off the nightstand. The fear that seemed to be my constant companion flared.

“Hey.”

“Dad’s in the hospital.” He spoke neutrally like he’d been awake for hours too. “Massive heart attack.”

Chapter Thirty-Six

Pepper

The phone fellfrom Teague’s hand onto the bed.

“What’s wrong?”

Ash edged closer and nosed his thigh.

He stared at me helplessly.

“My father had a massive heart attack.”

I grabbed the bedpost to steady myself when I swayed. We’d been so sure he was responsible for all the evil swirling around us.

He was horrible.

Despicable.

That didn’t make him guilty. It didn’t make him worthy of suffering a heart attack.

It would be easy to think that. All the evidence pointed to him. But even with what we knew, there was so much we didn’t. So many puzzle pieces that were simply confusing. Had we been wrong about his dad earlier though?

“I’ll go with you to the hospital.” I searched in the dim light for my overalls.

He didn’t move. “Why would I go?”

I stepped in front of him and grabbed his arms. “Because if you don’t and something happens, you have to live with it.”

“He doesn’t deserve any of us being there.”

I couldn’t argue with that. “Don’t be like him.”

Something about my words seemed to shake Teague. He swiped his jeans off the floor and tossed them onto the bed. He shoved off his sweats, and I resumed my search for my own clothes. Now wasn’t the time to be distracted by his perfect body.

The dogs were on alert. Both of us petted them in between changing clothes.

Sadie barked.

Teague kissed the top of her head. “It’s not time yet.”

I loved that he understood and accepted her. All of us.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

The doorknob turned. “Everybody decent?”

“Yes,” I called.

“I was hoping the answer was no.” Miss Adeline poked her head in and frowned. “Why are you up before the sun?”
