“What are you going to do?”

I crossed my ankles. “Play checkers with him.”

“Cal—”

“Don’t call me that.” I hated it. Then again, I didn’t deserve to be special to her.

“Damn it. I have to go.” It sounded like she was scrambling around. “Please don’t do something stupid.”

She was gone before I could answer.

Alex Davenport. Where do you live, asshole?

I opened a browser on my phone and searched his name.

What the actual hell?

Alex Davenport had landed the first blow and it was hard enough to make me see stars. I rubbed my eye but the first headline didn’t change.

Engagement Announcement! Two dynasties unite. Alex Davenport and Beau Hollingsworth to wed this weekend.

Chapter Thirty-Six

Beau

“I expect impeccable behavior.”

Father hissed in my ear before he kissed my cheek.

He placed a hand on the small of my back and guided me into the parlor, where the Davenports were waiting. Once again, I felt like a show pig on display.

It was after seven and neither of my brothers were anywhere to be found. Part of me hoped they didn’t show. Pretending to want to marry Alex would be much harder in front of them.

What if they bring Lexie and Pepper?

Lexie would see right through my act, and I was pretty sure Pepper would too. If Miss Adeline tagged along, it would be over. That woman wasn’t afraid to call bull when she saw it.

Alex stood and beamed like I was the light of his life. Actually, it was more like he was so close to getting his hands on the prize . . . not me, but my family’s power and money.

He was here and in one piece, although there hadn’t been time for Cal to pay him a visit.

You should’ve kept your mouth shut.

It wasn’t right to put Cal in that position. I had no doubt he would teach Alex a very tough lesson on how to treat women. But Cal didn’t understand the rules of this world. He had no idea what the Davenports could do to him.

Lincoln and Teague could accomplish the same thing and the Davenports wouldn’t give them any trouble. Because there were serious consequences. The biggest one losing this potential union.

I didn’t want anything to happen to Cal. Not because of me.

I hadn’t forgiven him—not even close—but he’d been there for me when I needed him. I wouldn’t forget that.

Maybe he’ll beat Alex to a pulp and he’ll be too bruised to possibly go on with the wedding.

No. The thought was selfish.

I had no remorse over wishing Alex would feel what it was like to be scared and powerless and battered. Right or wrong, I wasn’t into taking the higher road.

It was the consequences to Cal I wasn’t keen on.
