And I didn’t feel like being called out on it now.

“Had a lot on my mind.” Family pressure. Money pressure. Work pressure.Beau.

“Which is why we need the beers so you can unload it.”

I looked at him in disgust. “It’s beers. Not therapy.” The point of the drinks was to forget all of it, not wallow in it.

He laughed. “Hurry up and get dressed, pretty boy. Let’s get out of here.”

Donnovan's was filledwith the after-work crowd who had stayed for a few too many drinks.

“Hey!” Brennan waved us over to a table they’d grabbed near the bar.

“I’ll get a round,” I grunted as Vigiano forked off toward our friends.

“Cal, where you been hiding?” Roy Donnovan slapped my hand when I leaned against the bar.

“Here and there.”

He popped the top on four beers and slid them over the surface. “Quinn came in asking for you the other day.”

My grasp on one of the cold bottles slipped, but discreetly I readjusted my hold. “Thanks.” I held up a beer in salute.

Of course.When it rains . . .

“I’ll put these on your tab.”

I nodded and made my way across the bar.

“Thanks, honey,” Scopetta said when I deposited the drinks on the table.

I gave a little curtsey and pretended to fluff my non-existent shoulder-length hair.

“He’s the ugliest waitress I ever seen.” Brennan threw a peanut at me.

“You been eating those?” I pointed to the bowl as I turned my chair backward and sat.

The grin fell from his face. “Yeah. Why?”

I took a sip of my beer.Damn that was good. “No reason.”

“What’s wrong with the peanuts?” Brennan looked at the other guys with lines creasing his forehead. “Why am I the only one eating them?”

Scopetta groaned. “Look what you started, asshole.”

I picked up a nut, tossed it in the air, and caught it with my mouth. “Happy now?”

He settled back into his chair. “A little.”

“Cal, you keep shit stirred up,” Scopetta said, taking a swig of beer.

Wasn’t that the truth?

“I heard a rumor about Christina and Stanis.”

Any tension that swallow of beer had released came back tenfold. “And you better keep that rumor to yourself.”

Vigiano twisted toward me, brow furrowed. “What’s he talking about?”
