I hated it. Hated it on her lips anyway.

“Everyone else does.”

“And you ain’t everyone else.”

She pulled on the door handle. “Let me out. I’ll take a cab.”

“No.”

“You’re driving like a maniac.”

“You were never scared in the car with me before.”

Turn.

Another turn.

Turn again.

I couldn’t shake the car.

“You were never this erratic.”

“Would somebody want to follow you?” I asked through my teeth. Because I couldn’t think of a single person who would have a reason to tail me.

She twisted in her seat, looking out the back window. After a minute, she faced forward again and hung her head. “Just take me to Lincoln’s.”

Defeat was in every syllable.

And that was worse than her sharp attitude toward me. I’d take the feisty Beau any day over this.

“Who is that?”

She sat with her shoulders rounded, still fiddling with her necklace. “I can’t do this anymore.”

She spoke so softly, I almost didn’t hear her.

I touched her leg, torn between trying to lose whoever was following us and comforting her. Beau always won out.

She stiffened at the unwanted contact, but I needed it. Needed to feel her. Because my heart felt like it was about to beat out of my chest.

I slowed to a more reasonable speed. She was right. It wasn’t worth the risk of an accident.

“Can’t do what?”

“He follows me. Everywhere.”

Rage like I’d never known boiled to the surface. Some asshole wouldn’t leave her alone? I slowed further. I’d stop this truck and make sure he never bothered her again.

What kind of creep would stalk her?

God knew I’d wanted to but only to make sure she was okay. I wasn’t some sick twisted bastard who couldn’t let her go.

I pulled over.

Actually, I was. But I was going to end this right now for her.

I threw the truck in park.
