She screwed up her face in disappointment. “I won’t.”

She ended the call and tossed the phone beside her. “Can you go to the drugstore? I need some foundation.”

“Some what?”

“It’s makeup.”

“You want me to go buy you makeup?” I asked as if she’d requested I navigate a spaceship to the moon.

Something lightened on her face. “Are you afraid of cosmetics?”

I stared at her incredulously. “Hell yeah, I am.”

She laughed. The sound was a rocket back to the past. I’d never taken it for granted, but never thought I’d hear it again.

“But you aren’t scared to run into a burning building?”

“Nope.”

“The makeup aisle at the drugstore?”

I shuddered. “Terrifying.”

She snickered. “I almost want to go with you just to witness it myself.”

My brow furrowed. “You’ll really love it if I run into one of the guys from the station.”

Her eyes widened in mock-horror. “Really, really love it.”

If going to the drug store to buy makeup put that smile on her face, I’d do it every single day.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Beau

“Miss Hollingsworth. These are for you.”

The spray of roses and baby’s breath nearly took up the entire reception desk. I was actually grateful, hoping they blocked the receptionist's view of me.

Cal had done pretty well with the shade of foundation, but he was right. The bruises had been nearly impossible to cover up.

He’d stayed right with me in the bathroom as I’d faced my injuries for the first time. And I appreciated all the support he’d given me.

His thoughtfulness was almost too much to take. He’d even bought some flip-flops at the drug store because I’d lost my shoes.

He’d been there when I needed someone. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with that.

Looking in the mirror at what Alex had done hadn’t been easy. It was a reminder of my failure to stand up for myself. But it also renewed my determination.

You forgot all fire, independent, and fearless.

I wouldn’t again. Not if I could help it.

I pulled the card from the arrangement. The girls sent me flowers every year on my birthday, but that wasn’t today.

I ripped the envelope, curiosity taking over.

Forgive me, love. I’ll see you tonight. - Alex
