I narrowed my gaze. “What do you know?”

Was this just something else my big brother kept from me in the name of protection?

He sank into a chair across from my desk. “Not now.”

“Did he have her—”

“I don’t know. But not. Now.” He leaned forward, discussion closed.

We weren’t in a safe space to openly talk about it. Father was likely still just down the hall. But Lincoln would never bring up the topic again, no matter where we were.

“Later never comes with you,” I muttered. Maybe this hadn't been a good time to bring up her murder. Not on his wedding day, but I was out of sorts like I'd been tumbled about and didn't know which way was up.

“I’m not the only one who isn’t forthcoming.” He folded his arms and lifted a brow.

“Father introduced me to Alex. We hit it off. The alliance makes sense.”Why don’t you tell them the truth?

I couldn’t.

Your brothers are quite happy, don’t you think? More so than I’ve ever seen. I’d hate for that to change. Tragedies are so common now.

My own happiness meant nothing compared to his and Teague’s.

“Is this why you came back to New York?” Teague asked, his hurt equaled to Lincoln’s.

Unwittingly, yes it was.

“Looks like I’ll be moving back to the city. That’s a plus, right?” I forced a lightness in my tone I didn’t feel.

“It is,” Lincoln said through his teeth.

“Don’t sound so excited.”

He scowled at my sarcasm. “It seems we have a major communication problem.”

The only person I didn’t have one with was Father. And Cal. I couldn’t seem to stop my thoughts from tumbling out around him whether I liked it or not.

“We’re working on it.” I picked up a file. “I have a bit of good news.”

“Besides your pending nuptials?”

I glared. “I’ve found apartments to relocate the tenants for our Ludlow project. They’re nearby and should be suitable. It’s a semi-wedding gift. I just hadn't had a chance to tell you yet.”

This was not the time to bring this up, but I had to divert attention. I hated what Father had done to Lincoln and Lexie’s day. Hopefully this was some good news to get us back to celebrating.

“You found an entire building to house them in?”

“I’m not a miracle worker.” I made awhat are you thinkingface. “I searched for several buildings nearby and am in talks with the landlords to finalize the terms.” I pushed at the folder on the desk. “I also sent letters to the tenants and plan to go door-to-door to make sure the pertinent information is conveyed.”

“When do you plan to do that? I’ll go with you.”

I rubbed my face. “I’m not sure yet, but I’ll let you know.”

He craned his neck. “How did you get that bruise on your jaw?”

Dang it. Dang it. Dang it.

“I dropped something and banged it on the desk when I bent to pick it up,” I said lightly.
