The light turned green and I sped off.

“No. They wouldn’t have.”

I could’ve given her love and family, but she was destined for more than that. There is nothing more important than that. Not in my world.

And seeing how she’d been with Ma, how hungry she looked for that motherly attention, maybe I’d screwed up not giving that to her before. It could’ve strengthened her.

She twisted in her seat. “They would have.”

She sounded so sure, but she was wrong.

“Oh yeah? Tell me how,” I challenged. It was a dangerous path. One we had no business going down. The past was just what it was. There was no changing it. “Never mind. There’s no point.”

“Did you ever love me?”

I pulled over in front of the rubble of Joe’s house.

“That’s the wrong question, baby sister.” I stared at the charred dreams of my brother. Mine had burned to the ground a long time ago.

For a moment, she unshuttered her eyes and let me see all the pain I’d caused.

It was too much. I’d never wanted to hurt her, but it was the only way she’d been able to fly.

I let go of her hand. It was too much to touch her. It hurt to see all we’d lost. But how did we lose something that was never really ours to begin with?

She fisted her chain and dropped her chin to her chest. “That’s what I thought.”

She had it all wrong.

“The right question is: did I ever stop?”

Chapter Twelve

Beau

Did I ever stop?

Did I ever stop?

The words had been on repeat in my head since he’d spoken them. Streetlights and buildings blurred past. I couldn’t focus on anything but those four words.

They couldn’t be true.

I might not know the exact second he had stopped loving me, but I was well aware of the second I’d found out.

And then I thought about all of his behavior again.

That was the only moment he’d ever hurt me.

Sure, we’d bickered, but it was never vicious. Not like that.

That question bolstered my earlier theory.

He’d lied to me all those years ago.

He hadn’t used me or grown tired of me. Cal had pushed me away. On purpose. He’d destroyed my faith in him. On purpose.

But why?
