“To get my things,” I said over my shoulder.

“Not without me.” He kissed Pepper and was right behind me.

The elevator ride to the garage was silent. There was a piece of me that didn’t want to go. Icouldbuy new things. But a bigger piece was tired of hiding.

Cal reached for my hand when the elevator doors opened. I wasn’t sure if he sensed I needed his touch or if he needed mine.

I practically had to run to keep up as he stalked toward his truck. He held open my door and secured me in before clearing out some space in the back seat.

He fired up the engine, and I turned down the radio before one of our old songs could play. That was Cal’s and mine; I wasn’t ready to share that with anyone, not even my brothers.

“What’s the plan here?” Cal asked as he drove up the ramp.

“Good question,” Teague said. A tinge of annoyance at being left out was evident in his voice.

“We escort Beau to collect her belongings and we leave,” Lincoln said with more confidence than I had.

“You really think it’s going down that way?” Teague asked incredulously.

“You wanted the plan. I don’t know how reality will turn out.”

A pit formed in my stomach. I didn’t want to see my father. We should’ve called Winston to find out when Father wasn’t home. But avoidance and fear was how I’d gotten here in the first place.

I twisted in my seat. “Do you know why he wants the Davenports’ company?”

“Does anyone know why he does anything?” Teague threw his hands up.

“They have an excellent reputation as contractors. That fits with the development aspect of Hollingsworth Properties,” Lincoln said.

“I still haven’t figured out how I was supposed to steal their company.” It was baffling. If Father wanted it so badly, why didn’t he do it himself?

Because he can’t put himself at risk.

But his daughter was disposable.

“Don’t bother trying to get into his warped mind.” Teague gripped his thighs.

“I know you hate this house.” Awkwardly, I patted his knee. “Thank you for doing this. All of you.”

“You don’t ever have to thank me for doing my job as your brother.” He covered my hand and gently squeezed. “I’m pissed you’re married to him.” He inclined his head toward Cal. “But I love you too much to let that get in the way.”

Teague had such a kind heart. Lincoln too. Maybe it was the way we’d grown up, but we knew the importance of our relationship. None of us took it for granted.

“Love you too. Both of you. Even if you are giant pains in my rear.”

“I recall you didn’t speak to me after I said that about you.” There was a smile in Lincoln’s voice.

“You said I was annoying. That’s different,” I huffed, but I felt lighter.

“Naturally,” Lincoln said.

Cal had been quiet, focused on the street ahead. I appreciated his instinct that I needed a minute with my brothers. That he respected that.

He turned onto Father’s street. The house loomed ahead, and I second-guessed if this was the right move.

I’d never arrived unannounced.

I’d never disobeyed his wishes.
