He’d been the one with a level enough head to send her away with an ice pack.

I held up the device, and her eyes got glassy. I hadn’t decided where the butler’s allegiances lay, but he’d won some points with his behavior.

“Wanna unlock it for me?”

“The code is 0607.”

My hand froze. June seventh. The day I’d ended things. I blinked at her.

“A reminder I never want to feel pain like that ever again,” she said quietly.

Stab. Stab. Stab.

I’d hurt her to help her. But I’d never meant to cut her that deep.

I punched in the code and took the pictures again. When I was finished, she took the phone out of my shaking hand and blindly set it behind her.

She placed both palms on my chest.

I didn’t want her to feel how my heart raced, but I couldn’t control the tempo.

“I need you to make me a promise,” she said. “A big one.”

I’d already made big promises to her when she’d taken me as her husband. And I’d broken them.

“What is it?”

“That the only people you’ll hold responsible for this are him and my father.”

That was a massive promise to make.

I shook my head. “I can’t.”

I hated to say no to her, especially about something so important, but I didn’t want to lie. I couldn’t imagine a scenario where I’d ever get over the role I’d played.

“You can.” She pressed her hands into me. “If you try.”

“I’m sorry—”

“That’s the last one of those too. Let’s be done with apologies. What you’ve done for me says more than words ever could.”

I stared into those dark eyes that controlled my soul.

She was right.

What I’d done did say more than words.

I’d failed her.

And in time, she’d see she shouldn’t forgive me either.

Chapter Twenty

Beau

“Thanks for coming with me.”

I linked arms with Lexie as we approached the county courthouse.
