Prologue

2003

“The church looks really nice. Mom did a great job of decorating,” I said to my soon to be wife through the door of her dressing room.

We were trying to keep the tradition of not seeing the bride before the wedding, but we hadn’t seen each other in two days and wanted to talk before the ceremony.

“She had all of my aunts up all night, putting up all those flowers. They were in here getting dressed and complaining,” Keeva chuckled.

“Are you nervous?” I leaned in closer to hear her answer.

“No, are you?” she quickly responded.

“No, not about marrying you. I’m nervous about being in front of all these people,” I admitted.

The church was full. I was sure I didn’t know most of the people that were in attendance.

“Yeah, I’m not nervous about the wedding, either. I am nervous about strolling down the aisle while everyone looks at me. I mean, all these diets I’ve been on to get into this dress have worked. I’m fine as hell, but still…”

“Yeah? Let me see,” I said while pushing the partially opened door a little.

“Kerem!” she whisper-yelled while pushing the door back towards me.

“I’m just kidding,” I laughed. “I can’t wait to see you in your dress. I can’t wait to kiss you and finally call you my wife.”

“I can’t wait to be your wife. I’ve been practicing my signature with your last name for years,” Keeva answered.

“No matter what, we will always be together. We will fix any problem together. The Abernathys are permanent.”

“We are permanent,” Keeva echoed.

“Do you Kerem Abdul Abernathy take Keeva Marie Patterson to be your lawful wedded wife?” Keeva’s pastor asked.

“I do,” I responded while looking into Keeva’s eyes.

“Keeva Marie Patterson, do you take Kerem Abdul Abernathy to be your lawful wedded husband?”

“I do,” she smiled.

“By the power vested in me by the State of Missouri, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Kerem, you may kiss your bride.”

“Who the hell is TR texting your phone, Kerem?”

“Huh?”

He reached for his phone, but I snatched it back out of his reach.

“If you can huh me, you can hear me. I said who in the hell is TR?”

I stood in front of him holding his phone, waiting for him to lie to me. As soon as the lie began to part his lips, I was going to bust him in his mouth with his phone.

I folded my arms in front of me and waited for his response.

“She’s an acquaintance,” he stuttered.
