“Nothing is worth the way Key looked at me when she found out.”

My stomach churned at the memory.

“How did Key find out?”

“She saw a text from Tara on my phone. I’d been good about deleting them, but she saw that one before I did.”

“Damn…” Larenz shook his head and sat back in his chair.

“Here you go!” The waitress said after placing my next drink in front of me. “Can I get you anything else?”

“Yeah, keep my tab open and keep ’em coming, mine and his,” Larenz said.

“Okay,” she smiled and bounced away.

I wanted to throw something at the back of her head. Her cheerfulness was driving me insane.

“Is she always that cheery?”

“Yeah, that’s how she always behaves. We like her service, remember?”

“No, I don’t remember, and today she is getting on my nerves.”

“No, you’re projecting. Leave that girl alone she ain’t doing nothing, but her job. Now back to you. Are you still at the house?”

“Nope. I’m staying in a hotel. The bed is hard, the pillows are too soft, and it’s miserable. I couldn’t stay at the house because Key was actively trying to figure out the combination for the gun cabinet. She also threatened me with a knife.”

“Wow…”

“Right. I’d just changed the code on the cabinet and hadn’t told her the combination. I’m glad I didn’t. Things could be very different today.”

“You don’t think she would’ve hurt you, do you?”

“I don’t know. She is pissed off and hurt, which is a horrible combination.”

“And rightly so,” Larenz added.

“Yeah, I’m not disputing that. I know I fucked up. I can’t go back until things calm down, though.”

“What are you going to do? You gone kick it with ol’ girl or try to fix things with Key?” Larenz questioned.

“You know how much I love my wife. I don’t want to lose her over a lapse in judgment, but right now, she won’t take my calls or return my text messages. I drove all over town trying to figure out where she was the other night and finally found her car at her mom’s house. I don’t know what to do.”

“You know I can’t say nothing. I’ve had my own situations. I’m not going to call you dumb, but this shit is stupid. You saw me go through this and now I guess you wanted your turn?”

“I don’t know. It’s not something that I actively sought out. I just happened upon it. I wish I wouldn’t have because I have no idea how to fix it, but I gotta try, right?”

We sat quietly, sipping from our drinks for several minutes.

“You know when I did this same thing, you called me to the carpet?” Larenz said, breaking the silence.

I didn’t respond because I knew this conversation was coming. Larenz had his own bout with infidelity early in he and Robin’s marriage. Robin found out because one of the girls that he dealt with called and told her that they were messing around. I was furious at Larenz for hurting Robin after I’d cautioned him to chill out. We had a big argument about it and I told him to either love Robin or leave her alone. She didn’t deserve all the grief that he had caused. He called me pussy whipped and I called him an asshole, but in the end, he straighten up. We are back in the same place again, but now it’s me instead of him.

“I’m just going to give it to you like you gave it to me. You really messed this up, man. I understand the fact that you can get yourself into something that’s hard to get out of, but I thought you were smarter than that.”

“Samuel already gave me a whole lecture about how stupid this was,” I responded.

“Good! Someone needs to. There is no reason why you should be in this position when you know better! I overheard Robin and Key talking and Key cried the entire conversation. She has a lot of questions about this situation. Not about ol’ girl, but about what she did to make you do what you did.”
