“I knew his story growing up, but he is also one of our client’s lawyers. His team can be intimidating,” Kenny said.

“Yeah, he and Vee are a match made…somewhere. The last thing anyone would want to do is get on their bad side.”

“I can believe it. And Ken?”

“She and Travis are planning their wedding and they are still doing the music thing.”

I tried to keep the conversation going in a neutral direction, but Kenny rounded back out to his first question.

“You gone tell me or naw?”

I took a deep breath and told him the entire story from beginning to the slap.

“He didn’t put his hands on you, right?”

“No, he wouldn’t, but I thought that I would never put my hands on him either. I just can’t believe we are in this space. Kenny, I honestly don’t know what to do,” I finished choking back tears.

“Please don’t cry, Kiki.”

Retrieving several tissues from the box next to my bed, I dabbed my eyes, trying to ward off the ugly cry that was bubbling up in me.

“People can be stupid sometimes. What he did was really stupid. No matter what you choose to do, you are going to be fine, Kiki.”

“Yeah,” I agreed.

We caught up and reminisced until I was fighting to keep my eyes open.

“I have to leave Saint Louis tomorrow, but I would really like to see you in the morning before I go. Can we get coffee or something?”

“Sure.”

“Good night, Kiki. I’ve missed talking to you,” Kenny said.

“I’ve missed you too.”

Imet Kenny at a coffee shop down the street from Cam’s salon. I walked in and found him sitting in a booth in the back of the small establishment.

“Hey,” I said as I slid into the booth across from him.

He smiled. He was dressed down in a blue polo shirt and jeans from what I could surmise. He had diamond earrings in both ears, and his gold chain with the cross symbol could be seen resting on his neck.

“What time is your flight?”

“In a few hours. I’m sorry about last night. I didn’t mean to make you cry,” Kenny apologized.

He reached across the table and held my hand.

“It’s okay. It’s all I seem to do lately. It’s not your fault.”

“I enjoyed talking to you last night. It felt like old times,” I said.

“So look, when you decide if you’re coming to New York, let me know. I will plan some things for us to do. If you need me to get your ticket or anything let me know that too. I would be more than happy to take care of that for you.”

“Thank you, but I can handle that. I’m a bawse,” I chuckled.

“I would say, mogul,” Kenny laughed.
