“You cried like I was dead!” I laughed.

“I couldn’t control it. It was a full on ugly cry. I was so happy for you and Kerem. You were my relationship heroes. Now, I’m lost like when Cochise died inCooley Highand Preach was at his gravesite.”

“No, Preach used Cochise’s death to motivate him to pursue his dreams. You have to make your own happiness. Don’t pattern yours after mine. This is me and Kerem’s thing, not you and Travis’. I can’t take the guilt of you not getting married because of me. I’m sure Kerem would feel the same way.”

“Do you think you are going to divorce him?”

“Honestly, Ken, I have no freaking idea. I talked to the divorce attorney that Averie told me about. She said she would represent me, but not until I’ve thought about it some more. But, I’m tired of talking about him. Let’s just enjoy this evening like we used to before life got all complicated.”

“I’ll drink to that,” Kenzie said while pouring us another shot.

Kenzie and I had already gone through a large bottle of tequila by the time Averie arrived with bottles of wine. She didn’t know that Ken and I had already stocked up on liquor and various sweet and salty snacks.

“Come on, Sis, you gotta get caught up,” I said while filling a shot glass with the newly opened bottle of Añejo tequila. I passed the glass to Averie, and she threw it back immediately.

We all went into the living room and settled in on the couch. We flipped through the streaming services trying to find something to watch while we laughed, drank, and ate snacks.

“Oh, guess who I ran into the other day?”

“Who?” they both responded at the same time.

“Kenyatta,” I answered. “He was in town for a couple days and we just happened to be in the same place at the same time.”

“Doesn’t he live somewhere else?” Kenzie asked.

“He lives in New York. I told him that you wanted to look at dresses in New York, so he said that he wanted us to hang out.”

“Kenny, with his fine ass. He was my first crush. He could’ve gotten it without hesitation,” Averie mused.

“He was my first crush too!” Kenzie agreed.

“Did you have sex with Kenny?” Averie inquired.

“What? No! We were just friends. I told you that I’ve only seen one dick,” I responded.

“Oh, you don’t have to see it to get it. I mean I would encourage all women to examine the shit before you let him shove it in you, but some girls are shy and don’t look,” Averie explained.

“Oh, I would’ve looked. I heard some things about what he was working with down there.”

“Good things or bad things?” Kenzie asked.

“Terrific things.”

“Damn, I should’ve found out for us,” Averie sighed.

“Vee,” Kenzie giggled and hit her with a pillow from the couch.

“What? Ain’t no use in being around some legendary dick and not know for sure!” Averie maintained.

We all laughed.

“But for real, we were just friends,” I returned.

“Just friends?” Averie asked, using her quotation fingers. “Or just friends,” she finished without using the air quotes.

“Just friends,” I responded without the quotes.

“Why?” Kenzie asked.
