“One, zero, three, zero,” I said while touching the buttons on the keypad.

It didn’t unlock.

“One, zero, three, zero,” I punched again.

Nothing.

I thought the code was my birthday.

“Zero, three, zero, three,” I tried Kerem’s birthday as the code.

Nothing.

“This muthafucka changed the code on the safe and didn’t tell me!”

I stormed back into the bedroom and punched the bathroom door.

“You changed the code on the gun cabinet? You better be glad I don’t know it because I was going to kill your ass today. Betsey and Cleatus were going to be two mourning ass parents over your stupid ass.”

Hearing him talking to someone, I punched the door again.

“Who are you talking to?” I heard him say Vee’s name. “Oh, you calling my sister? You need to call on the Lord you trifling, nasty, motherfucker. You better hope I don’t get in there.”

“Okay, so um, me and Key are having a little disagreement, and she has a knife,” I heard him say. “Vee, I fucked up. Key is trying to kill me…”

“I’m going to kill you, you filthy, disgusting, lying ass, piece of shit,” I yelled.

“Please come and get her. I don’t want anyone to get hurt. She won’t listen to me,” Kerem pleaded.

“Open this door, Kerem. Be a man now. I’m just a girl. You scared?”

I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket. I answered it, knowing it was Averie.

“DO YOU REALLY THINK MY LITTLE SISTER CAN STOP ME FROM MURDERING YOUR ASS? WHAT DO YOU WANT AVERIE!?”

“Key, what’s going on?” Averie said, trying to sound all soothing and crap. I didn’t need to be soothed, I needed to be avenged.

“Nothing, I’m just trying to figure out a way to get into this bathroom to murder your brother-in-law.”

“Key, why would you want to do that?” She asked, sounding more like a therapist than my sister.

“Why not, Vee?” I returned in the same calm voice she’d used.

“Sweetie, I mean what would make you want to kill your husband. You love him, remember?”

“You remember Buffalo?”

“The dog we had when we were little?” Averie asked, sounding confused.

“Yeah, we loved Buffalo, too, but guess what? When his ass got out of line and bit the neighbor guess what we did? We put his biting ass down. Same thing here. Dogs need discipline; otherwise, how will they learn?”

“Sweetie, I’m on my way, okay? Can you please wait until I get there before you do anything rash? Please Key, I need both of you.”

“You probably should hurry because if I figure out what this bitch changed the code to on the gun cabinet, I am going to blow his dick off.”

I held the phone to my ear while I walked from the bedroom back to the gun cabinet. I decided to try the address of my first daycare center and the date we met, neither of which worked.

“Stay on the phone with me, Key. I’m almost there. What is that beeping sound?” Averie asked.
