“So, you gone say something to her this time or you gone chicken out again?” Peaches asked.

I chose not to answer immediately. Instead, I bought myself some time by lacing my skates. I’d never been around a girl that made me feel the way she did, and I hadn’t even spoken to her yet.

“Imma say something,” I answered while trying to breathe through the million butterflies going berserk in my stomach.

“Don’t look now, they are headed this way,” Peaches said.

The butterflies quadrupled in my stomach while I watched her and her crew approach our bench.

“What’s up, Ladies,” Peaches started, “Y’all looking good tonight.”

“Thank you,” each one replied.

My girl looked around Peaches and down at me, “I like your Raiders Starter jacket and hat. That black is dope,” she smiled.

When she smiled, I honestly believe my heart stopped beating a couple of beats. The wires and brackets on her teeth did not detract from her beauty or the brilliance of her smile.

I turned around to make sure she wasn’t talking to someone behind me.

“I’m talking to you,” she smiled again, melting my heart and cementing the fact that she would be mine.

“Thank you. You dope, too,” was all I could come up with, but I was proud that anything other than gibberish came out of my mouth.

“This is my friend, Bird…” she started.

“Robin,” Bird corrected.

“Robin,” she said, mimicking her. “And this is my sister, Averie. I’m Keeva. You want to skate together?”

It felt like all the stars had aligned in my favor. God was smiling down on me.

“Yeah,” I anxiously replied.

“Are you going to tell me your name or …?” she asked.

“Yeah,” I chuckled. “My name is Kerem.”

I took Keeva by the hand and led her onto the skating rink. I held on to her hand throughout high school and college. I hadn’t planned on ever letting her hand go.

I’m sorry. – The Hubs

Ilooked at the text message from Kerem and ignored it. After speaking with Averie, I decided to go over to my parents’ house. Sitting around the house, thinking about my husband sleeping with someone else was driving me crazy. I wanted to ask him why he did it, but at the same time, I didn’t want to see him. I wanted to ask him questions about her, but at the same time, I didn’t want to know anything about her. He didn’t have a picture of her on his phone, so I didn’t have anything except the initials TR. I forwarded her contact information to my phone right after I read the text message, so I had her telephone number.

I’d considered calling her phone to tell her that I knew she’d slept with my husband, but that felt so junior high school-ish that I decided against it. I didn’t know what I was going to do with her number, but I wasn’t getting rid of it.

I arrived at my parents’ house and used my key to get in. I planned to go up to my old room and sit for a while before talking to my mother, but she met me at the door.

“What happened?” Mommy said as soon as I crossed the threshold.

Her mommy senses must have gone off because I didn’t call ahead and I knew Averie hadn’t called her.

“Mommy he cheated on me,” I blurted before I could stop it.

“Oh no! Come here,” she said as she pulled me into her chest.

I buried my face into her shoulder and began to cry even though I’d told myself I wasn’t going to cry over a man. She rubbed my back and allowed me to soak her shirt with tears and snot.
