“Yes, I never said that we were having problems or anything like that. She knew Key, and I were still together.”

“How did you feel when Keeva found out?” Elisa asked.

“I felt guilty for hurting her, and honestly…it felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. Lying to her and keeping things from her are very hard for me to do. I wish I would’ve been man enough to tell her before she found out, though.”

“One of the most important things you both will need to do to make sure that the foundation is stable is forgive. Forgive yourself and forgive each other. Forgiveness is not stagnant, it’s cyclical. It has to be renewed and reapplied for the duration of the marriage. Also, not only forgive but act towards them like they’ve been forgiven. Words don’t mean anything without action,” Elisa said.

“After talking to you today, I think we are headed in a great direction. Let’s meet again and continue the conversation,” JD said.

Keeva and I agreed.

The next two sessions were very similar to the first one. We talked a lot about the beginnings of our relationship and learned some coping skills. Answering questions about me and the relationship was not easy for Key or me. After the first session, Key seemed to distance herself from me, but things have gotten a lot better since then.

“Ican’t believe this day is finally here,” Kenzie said while the make-up artist was applying her makeup.

Kenzie and all her bridesmaids stayed in a hotel suite overnight so that we all would be in the same place to get our makeup done and get dressed. There were three different makeup artist doing makeup, Cam was touching up hair, and there were two photographers all in the way taking pictures.

“Vee, make sure you have your flats to put on right after the ceremony,” Mommy instructed.

“Yes, Ma’am,” Averie said then turned and rolled her eyes. “Honestly,” she whispered, “what in the hell can a high heel do to a baby?”

I snickered so that Mommy wouldn’t hear us. Growing up, it always seemed like she had supersonic hearing. We didn’t get away with anything.

“Are you ready to do this, Sissy?” I asked Kenzie.

“I am more than ready,” she replied.

“So all of that stuff we talked about before is no more, right? You know this is the right move?”

“Yep, I’m positive, Cochise,” she chuckled.

“How are you and Reem doing?” Averie asked.

“We’ve started counseling. It’s good, but some things are hard to hear. We are getting better, though. The sex is still the best.”

“Yasss!” Averie high-fived me! “That’s what I’m used to hearing. I’m happy things are getting better.”

“I’m happy they are too,” I smiled.

The three bridesmaids all wore dusty blue, knee length dresses while I wore a light blue dress and Averie wore a navy blue one. The men all wore grey suits with ties the same color blue as the woman they escorted down the aisle.

The doors to the back of the church opened, revealing Kenzie’s beautiful lace, mermaid gown and the room took in a collective breath. She was stunning. The light hit her just right making her look angelic. I blinked hard to fight the tears and keep my makeup in check.

After the short ceremony, we took a million pictures, then went back into the room that had been transformed from the ceremony space to a beautifully decorated reception space. The DJ announced the bride and groom and Kenzie and Travis danced their way into the room.

The food stations were set up giving people a choice of several different types of food to include hamburgers, Chinese food, and of course fried chicken.

After Averie gave her toast, it was my turn. I stood from my seat at the head table and pulled Kerem up with me.

“Baby, you want to start?” I asked Kerem.

“Sure. When Key and I first met, Kenzie was, what? Eight years old? I’ve had the opportunity to watch her grow into a beautiful, caring, talented woman who I am so very proud of. She is the little sister that I wanted as a kid. Her unconditional love for me and Key have carried us through some very rough times. We are proud of both of you and know that this is the beginning of a dynasty. The beginning of a long line of blessed and talented people.

So, little sister, we love you. Lil bro, we are proud of you. Keep each other first, and there will be nothing that you won’t be able to achieve together,” Kerem finished then looked at me.

I quickly wiped the tears away that had finally escaped.
