After I calmed down enough to move, we walked into the living room and sat down on the couch. She grabbed several Kleenex from the box and started to wipe my face. I took the tissue and finished the job myself.

“What happened? How did you find out? It wasn’t on the Facebook or the Twitter was it?” Mommy asked.

If I weren’t in distress, I would’ve laughed at my mother’s social media references. She’d just gotten familiar with them and believed everything she read on them to be true. She loved sending my sisters, and I group messages about things she’d found on Facebook.

“No, ma’am. He wasn’t in the room when his text notification went off. It’s never been a thing for me to check his phone, so I picked it up to read the text. It was from some bit… I mean…”

“Speak freely,” Mommy shrugged.

“Some bitch sent him a text talking about she misses him and wants to be with him again. I asked him who it was, and he admitted to sleeping with her.”

“So, he admitted it?” Mommy asked.

“Yes, ma’am. He said it was a mistake and he fuc…”

I knew she said speak freely, but I couldn’t drop the f-bomb with my momma.

“…messed up. I just can’t believe he would do something like this and throw away everything we’ve built together.”

“Throw it away? He said he wants to be with her?” Mommy asked.

“No, but how stupid would I look if I stayed with an untrustworthy nigga? It’s over!”

I started to cry again. Mommy pulled me closer and rubbed my back until I calmed down again.

“What’s going on down here?” My daddy said as he entered the living room.

“Nothing, Wendell. Just girl stuff right now,” Mommy said.

“Okay, let me know if I need to get my gun. All I have are girls. I handle girl stuff all the time. You ain’t hurt are you?” Daddy questioned while examining me from where he stood.

“No, Sir,” I sniffed.

“Wendell,” Mommy shooed him away with her hand.

“I will be downstairs if you need me, Baby girl,” Daddy said as he left the room.

“Look, I understand what you are going through, and it’s not going to get any better at first, but I really want you to sleep on this a couple of days before you decide what you want to do, okay?” Mommy soothed.

“Are you taking his side?”

“Hell no, I’m not taking his side! There is no side of his to take. He made a huge mistake that I neither condone nor defend. I love him like I carried him in my belly, but he was wrong. What I am saying is that you are in no condition to make any permanent decisions, so don’t rush that process. Give yourself some time. And as far as the untrustworthy comment, all niggas are born with an untrustworthy gene. That doesn’t negate them from being good people, just not smart people. People make mistakes, Baby…”

“Mommy! This was more than a mistake!” I whined.

“A mistake is simply an error in judgment. Yes, this was a huge mistake, but a mistake, nonetheless. Sleep on it, okay?”

“Yes, ma’am. I am going to go and lay down upstairs. I’m exhausted.”

“That’s a great idea. I will come up and check on you later.”

“Hello?” I answered my phone after debating with myself about whether or not I should.

“Key, can we talk?”

I had so many conflicting emotions coursing through me. I didn’t want to talk to him, but I missed him at the same time.
