“Yes, I can see everything, but you know I only have a solid four or five innings in me before my mind will wander off to something else,” I admitted.

“Even though they are playing the team your sister has part ownership in?”

“Yep,” I chuckled.

The St. Louis Cardinals were playing the Charlotte Stars, who were now owned by a team of people two of which were Averie and Samuel. Averie made history by being the first black woman to own part of a major league baseball team. She took it all in stride as Averie was known to do, but the rest of the family celebrated her and Samuel’s success.

“Excuse us,” Averie said as she and Samuel moved past us to find their seats next to us. They both wore the Stars black and silver jersey while everyone else in our section had on red Cardinals shirts. Samuel liked sitting among the people at the Cardinals home game because he really was a fan of both teams.

“Who has King?” I asked Averie.

“Reggie and Vivian have him. Mommy and Daddy are going over to Vivian’s house ‘for dinner,’ Averie said using air quotes. “But you know they just want to go and spoil KD.”

“Well, he’s the most adorable kid I’ve ever seen so he deserves to be spoiled.”

“He is cute,” Averie agreed. “How are you feeling mommy to be?”

“Good! I didn’t think we would get pregnant so soon after I stopped the birth control, but this little baby wants to be here. I get the cervical cerclage removed in another month when I am thirty-seven weeks. The C-section is planned for a week after I get the stitch removed.”

“I can’t wait to see this little one,” Kerem said and rubbed my stomach.

“He is taking six weeks of paternity leave. His new position at Hotep will allow him to take off or work from home until we get used to having a little one around,” I said.

Kerem’s position at Hotep Bank was everything he’d hoped it would be. He finally had the influence to affect some positive changes while working on Samuel’s corporation at the same time. The job switch was good for him.

“I’m so happy for you,” Averie smiled.

“I’m happy too. You know how scary it was when I found out I was pregnant again and all the egg shells we walked on at first. Now, I’m just ready to see her little face.”

“She’s never going to learn how to walk because no one is going to put her down,” Averie chuckled.

“I know, right?”

“Hey y’all!” Robin said as she and Larenz and their kids found their seats behind us. Their family looked cute in their matching Cardinals shirts and denim shorts.

“Hey!” We all responded.

“Key, what are you sitting on? You have your pillow, right?” Robin said as she leaned over to check my seat.

“Yes, ma’am. I have my pillow. Both she and Cam had turned into my surrogate mothers during my pregnancy. Cam was more concerned with my food choices while Robin was concerned about my comfort and stress levels.

Cam was scheduled to be at the game with us, but Lyrica asked her to go to some concert dates overseas with her, so Cam was gone. She sent pictures every day and Facetimed when she could. She seemed to be having the time of her life.

“How is the building coming along?” Larenz asked.

“Perfect, we will start accepting kids to the after-school and summer program next week. We got the pool building all up to code, hired a couple of lifeguards for the summer swim, and we are doing swim classes,” I answered.

“We are working with the Valentine Corporation to provide breakfast and lunch for kids in the summertime and they are sponsoring a couple of the kids that can’t afford the dance and martial arts fees,” Kerem added.

“That’s dope,” Larenz answered.

“We are definitely enrolling the kids for the summer program,” Robin added.

“What did you decide to name it?” Larenz asked.

“I already told you what I was going to name it.”

“Naw, you said The Carter,” Larenz responded.
