“What do we have to talk about, Kerem?”

“Us,” he quietly responded.

“What about us?”

“What happens now?”

“Who is she Kerem?”

“She is nobody…”

“You’re protecting her?”

“What? No, I just…”

“Who is she?”

I wanted to know the answer but didn’t want to know the answer. While waiting for his response, I was praying that I didn’t know this person. I was praying that she wasn’t someone that I would run into and be forced to whoop her ass. Then again, she deserved an ass whooping for sleeping with a married man.

“I met her when I was working on the funding for the new community center. She worked for the development agency that sponsored the project,” he answered.

“And?”

“And I…I got myself into a fucked-up situation, Key. I already told you the rest.”

“No, you didn’t! You told me that you made a mistake. That’s not telling me the rest! How long have you been fucking her? How many times have you been with her?”

The volume of my voice gradually increased until I was sure I was yelling loud enough for my parents to hear me. I took a deep breath as the tears started to fall again and waited for his answers.

“None of that matters. I don’t want to be with her. I want to be…”

“Go die, Kerem. Go die a horrific, gruesome, and painful death.”

I disconnected the call, turned my phone off, and cried until I fell asleep.

Waking up the next morning to a massive headache and fifty missed messages was not the best way to start my day. Luckily, it was Saturday, and I didn’t have anything planned except an appointment with my hair stylist, Cam. I sent her a quick text to let her know that I was not going to make it. I hated canceling on her the day of my appointment. I knew I would forfeit my deposit that was paid to hold my appointment slot, but I was not in the mood for someone messing with my hair.

I walked downstairs to the kitchen and hoped I didn’t run into either one of my parents. I needed some water and something to make my headache go away. It felt like a migraine headache mixed with sinus pressure. I needed relief quickly. I looked outside and saw that my car was the only car in the driveway. Mommy and Daddy probably went to the farmer’s market. They usually did that together on the weekends.

After finding a bottle of ibuprofen, I grabbed three bottles of water and made my way back to my room. I sat up in bed and read my missed text messages. Most of which were from Kerem asking if we could talk in person. Then saying he went by the house and I wasn’t there, where was I? He sent another one saying he went by Averie’s place and no one answered the door. Another one said he saw my car parked at my parents’ house, then asked if I would come out and talk to him.

I guess he finally got the hint that I wasn’t going to respond to his messages because the last one he sent asked me to call him so that he could answer any questions I had.

As tempting as that offer was, I didn’t feel like talking to him at the moment. Instead, I called my best friend, Bird.

“Hey, friend? What are you doing up so early on a Saturday? Oh, you must have a hair appointment,” Bird said as soon as she answered the phone.

“I canceled my hair appointment.”

“WHAT! Hell must’ve frozen over or are pigs flying?” She chuckled.

“Neither, Kerem and I got into it yesterday, and he had to call Vee to come and save him.”

“Wait, what? What are you talking about?”

“He cheated on me, Bird.”

Bird and I had been best friends since elementary school. Our fathers worked together, and our husbands were best friends. Her husband, Larenz, who we called Peaches until he finally made us quit, was with Kerem the first time he and I spoke to each other.
