“Of course. What do you have going on this morning?” Nuri asked.

“So, Skye just called me and asked me to come up to their school forMuffins with Moms. Apparently, their mom isn’t going to make it.”

“Skye is Moe’s oldest, right?”

“Right.”

“I wish I could say I was surprised,” Nuri huffed.

“Right, which sucks for the girls. Anyway, I sent Morris a text and asked if it was okay for me to go, but he hasn’t responded. I don’t want to get there late, but at the same time I don’t want to do something with them without his permission,” I explained.

“This is just my opinion, so you take this how you want, but I would rather see you go and support those little girls, and if he has a problem with it, ask for forgiveness later. I don’t see why he would, but you never know. She called you so there is obviously a reason why she doesn’t want her and her sister to be there alone and I get it. My mommy was at all my stuff. I don’t know what that would feel like to have something like that without her,” Nuri said.

“I agree. I’m going to call his office and see if I can speak to him. If not, I am just going to go ahead and go. I will send you the list and my money. Thanks, girl.”

“No problem, hun,” Nuri replied.

After calling Morris’ office and speaking with the receptionist, I sent him another text before I decided to head in the direction of the girls’ school. I stopped by the coffee shop and picked up two cute ceramic travel coffee mugs, filled them with hot chocolate and got myself a fresh cup of coffee.

I arrived at the school just as the other “moms” were arriving. I stopped at the office and got my visitor’s pass then proceeded to the gymnasium, where I spotted both girls sitting at a table.

“Ms. Cam!” they both ran over and gave me a hug.

“I got you both a travel cup, so we can be fancier than all these regular girls with regular moms,” I whispered.

They both giggled.

I got a pink cup for Fee and a green one for Skye. They directed me to their table after we chose from a vast assortment of breakfast pastries that were neatly displayed on a table in the back of the room.

Looking around the room, I saw all the little girls with their moms. I never attended a school fancy enough to have an event likeMuffins with Moms, but if I had, I would have been the little girl sitting with the teacher because I didn’t have a mom to have muffins with. That was the exact thought that flashed through my mind when Skye called. The last thing I wanted was to see them suffer for the choices their mother made.

I knew I wasn’t their mother, nor was I trying to be, but I decided that I was going to settle into the role, for the moment, of the best representative I could be.

The girls and I talked and ate our pastries until the principal of the school got up to welcome all the moms and talk about upcoming events happening at the school. After the principal finished with the announcements, which included trying to get people to volunteer for the PTA, she started handing out awards. Everyone clapped politely as several girls were called for various awards like most helpful and good neighbor awards. She then passed out an academic award to the top mathematician. A little blonde girl politely walked up to the front to receive her award while her mother smiled and clapped.

“This award goes to the top reader in the school. This student has completed at least one book per week, sometimes two. She is reading well beyond her grade level. Ms. Phoenix Owens!”

Fee smiled and stood up to get her award while I stood up, cheered and clapped. I didn’t care that I was the only one who cheered loudly for their “kid,” she deserved it!

“Yay, Fee!” I cheered as she received the certificate.

I got out my phone to record it, and I snapped a few pics for Morris.

We high fived when she came back to the table.

“That’s what I’m talmbout, Fee!”

I missed the next award, doting on Fee, and reading her certificate. I turned my attention back to the principal to hear her next speech.

“This student will represent us in the statewide spelling bee competition in the summer. She breezed through every round of competition here at the school. She is a phenomenal speller, Ms. Skylar Owens.”

Again, I cheered like I was the Black family at a graduation. I recorded her receiving her award and snapped some pics. I felt a tremendous amount of pride.

I high fived Skye then had her and Fee posed next to each other so I could take some pictures of them holding their certificates.

“Would you like for me to take a picture of you with your daughters?” one of the mothers asked.

“Um…yes, please.” I handed her my phone, and me and the girls posed for a few pics. We did a couple of serious poses before we did the Black girl head tilt and duck lips.
