Even though darkness had fallen, the parkway lights were bright enough for her to make him out clearly. This evening, he wore a navy blue short-sleeved shirt with epaulets on the shoulders, crests on the sleeves, and one above his heart. This was tucked into his navy-blue slacks. His blond hair sported a partial side part, and the strands were slicked down neatly. As he walked toward the porch briskly, his eyes remained trained on the black wristwatch he wore.

Sensing her eyes on him, the man looked up. As recognition flashed in his eyes, he froze in his tracks.

“If I didn’t know any better, I would have to think you were the one stalking me, Mr. Hasgrove,” she joked, taking the next few steps off the porch to meet him.

The man chuckled. “This is quite the surprise, Ms. Hamilton,” he spoke as he shook the hand she held out to him. “I wasn’t aware you were Samuel Hamilton’s daughter,” he continued to say.

Andrea gave him a weak smile. “Well, now you know.”

“I must express my own condolences to you. Mr. Hamilton was a good man. Someone I truly respected.”

She gave him another rueful smile. “It turns out everyone else knew the type of man my father was better than I did.”

Donny’s brows drawing together made her realize that she’d said that out loud.

“Shall we get to it?” she asked cheerily, hoping he would forget her earlier statement.

“Huh? Yeah, sure.”

He followed her onto the porch, where she offered him a seat in one of the plush armchairs as she sat in another facing him.

She got straight into it. “To tell you the honest truth, I don’t create websites for my clients. I do Facebook advertising, but seeing as I’m back in Oak Harbor and I have a little time on my hands, I decided to provide my services.”

“Okay, thanks, I guess,” Donny replied, unsure. After taking in a long breath and releasing it slowly, he fixed his sharp blue eyes on her. “I’m not really into technology like that, but whatever you need, I’ll make sure you have it. Captain says this project is important to the improvement of the department, so I am all for it,” he informed her.

“I’m happy to hear that. I take it that you’re very dedicated to your job,” she observed.

“It’s been my life for over twenty years, ten back in Chicago and ten here. The people I work with are my family, and so whatever I can do to shed a positive light on our department, I’m your man.”

Andrea smiled at this, realizing that this was a man after her own heart. Like her, he was dedicated to his work, and he loved what he did. She could see that this project wouldn’t be so bad after all.

After setting an appointment to come by the fire station to interview the firefighters and take some pictures of them and the station for the website, Donny left for work, and Andrea used the time to update her Google Calendar before retiring to bed.
