“Yeah, Mom, what is it?” Rory asked on alert as her mother had used her by her full name.

Andrea turned to look at her daughter with a sad smile.

“My sweet, sweet Aurora.” She reached out to touch her daughter’s ginger hair before cupping her face and placing a gentle kiss on her cheek.

“Mom, you’re scaring me,” Rory spoke, her voice shaking with fear.

“I’m so sorry, sweetie. For everything.”

Rory looked at her mother with furrowed brows.

“I want you to know that what I’m about to tell you… I only did it to protect you.”

“Mom,” Rory returned, her voice quaking.

“Your father didn’t die when you were a baby. I lied… he just passed away last month, and he left an inheritance for you. In order to claim the inheritance, you must acknowledge it by the end of this month,” she rushed out.

“What?”

Andrea’s gaze was glued to her daughter’s. She watched as Aurora’s face was marred with confusion and tried to let the information sink in, but Andrea knew once it did, anger would be the next emotion to take over. She gulped down the remaining remnants of her wine for support.

She knew she was going to need it.
