“We were having dinner at the restaurant, and she had a muscle spasm. She couldn’t hold the fork in her hand, and we had to end the night.” Cora detailed the incident.

“Oh my God,” Jo responded as her hands went up to cover her mouth.

Cora gave her a rueful look. “We knew it was coming, Jo, but we just have to be there for her more than we’ve been doing.”

Jo nodded in answer. “Just tell me what you need me to do,” she implored her sister.

Soon the two settled back into packing up the rest of the decorations. “Cora,” Jo called out to her sister, halting her movements.

She hesitated before asking, “Have you noticed anything about Tracy?”

Cora looked back at her in confusion. “No. Like what?” she asked, straightening up.

Jo sighed as she too straightened up. “I’m not sure,” she said slowly. “She just seems a little off, like something is bothering her and… I don’t know. I guess I’m worried about her,” she confessed.

“Jo, Tracy is fine,” her sister assured her. “Maybe you’re reading a little too much into her actions because of all that has happened in the past year and how it has affected her. You’re probably projecting,” Cora reasoned.

Jo opened her mouth to speak but then closed it when no words left her lips.

“Jo, she’s fine,” Cora affirmed.

“You’re right,” she agreed. “I’m probably just overreacting.”

She still couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more than what met the eyes. Her interactions with her daughter felt different, as if she was keeping something from her. Suddenly her mind flashed to the revelation she had gotten a few months ago that had shattered her even more than the death of her husband. It was something she wasn’t sure she would ever be able to share with anyone. She was too ashamed by it to even dwell on it too much, and if her daughter found out what she knew, she knew the level of devastation it would wreak on her. She prayed to God she would never find out about it— at least not until she thought Tracy was strong enough to handle the truth.
