“What did Dad do?”

Her eyes widened as the façade slipped at her daughter’s directness. “Wh-what do you mean?” she asked, flabbergasted. “Why are you asking me this?”

Tracy stared at her mother, her eyes contemplative. After a minute of just staring and Jo feeling trapped by her daughter’s unwavering stare, Tracy spoke again. “A man approached me back in Arlington the day before we arrived here. He was saying some things that just didn’t make sense, and I didn’t want to believe him, but the more I think about it, the more my gut is telling me that it’s true,” she said, her eyes filled with sadness.

“What did he tell you?” Jo managed to get out as her fingernails dug into her palms from how tightly she fisted her hands.

Tracy turned glistening eyes toward her mother. “He said that Dad’s accident didn’t happen the way it was reported. He said I should ask you because you knew what actually happened, but if you refuse to tell me, he’ll do it himself.”

At her daughter’s revelation, Jo’s heart slammed against her chest, and her lungs seemed to empty themselves of all the air as the walls of her throat tightened, making it difficult to breathe.

She knew then that this could be a life-altering moment between her and her daughter. She prayed that things would be all right.
