“Hi,” she replied, her voice breathless as the butterflies clogged her throat.

“Are you all right?” Daniel stared at her with concern in his eyes which only caused her heart to beat out a wild tattoo as she tried to formulate her thoughts. “Yeah… um… I’m great, actually.” She smiled an awkward smile.

Daniel smiled back at her, but the concern was still present in his eyes.

Jo quickly ducked her head and took her place beside him. “What do you need me to do?” she asked, not looking at him.

“Jo,” she heard him call her name, his voice soft and worried. “If you’re not feeling up to the work today, you don’t have to. I know I am always joking that letting you go is not an option, but I need you to be okay. That is more important to me than an—”

“I’m fine. I promise,” Jo jumped in to assure him. “I’m just a bit… nervous?” Jo looked up into the steel-gray eyes that were already steering back at her, holding her captive in their mesmerizing glow.

“Why are you nervous?” he asked, his voice lowered an octave, the cadence causing her heart to thunder behind her ribcage. She felt the single line of sweat that collected at her nape run down her spine.

“Um… there is a Dixie Chicks concert on the island two weeks from now. I was wondering… I was wondering if you would like to go with me?” Jo switched her weight from one foot to the next. She inconspicuously wiped her hand against her pants as she waited for him to speak but then quickly added, “The girls are going too.”

Daniel palmed the back of his neck. “You’re asking me on a date?”

“Not a date… per se… I just thought that maybe you would want to join us,” she rebutted. When Daniel didn’t answer immediately, it made her regret asking.

“Sure, I’d love to,” he remarked with a wide grin. Jo released the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding in. “On one condition, go to dinner with me on a date.”

Jo felt her heart rate skyrocket once more, and an angry sweat broke out over her brows. “Daniel,” she started with uncertainty.

“Jo, just say yes,” he interjected, looking at her seriously.
