“The gardener?”

“The very same.”

“I must say that I am surprised. I would imagine you with someone a little closer to your age.”

Laura fell silent. Diana had a point. Frederick was twenty years her senior, and although she liked him very much, Laura could never see herself marrying him. She felt shame. She’d lied. It didn’t feel good to lie. “Diana, if I tell you something, you must promise that you won’t tell another.”

“I promise.” Diana lifted up her pinky finger, and Laura clasped it with her own pinky finger.

“I … It’s so silly I don’t know that I can even mention it.”

Diana smiled knowingly. “You’ve fallen for Edward.”

Laura didn’t know whether to feel mortification or relief. So, Diana really was seeing it all. There was no more need to lie. “I’m afraid that I have unexplainable feelings.”

“Love is very unexplainable.” Diana’s voice became hushed. “Unless it’s lust.”

“Diana!”

“It’s hard to tell the difference between the two.”

“I can most certainly say that it’s not lust that I feel.” Except, Laura had to think about it. She’d never felt lust before and had heard the word only a few times. But she knew what it meant. She learned about it in her novels.

“Time will tell.” Diana got up from the bed. “Until then, enjoy the feeling of lusting after a lord.”

Laura brought a hand up to cool her hot cheek.
