Edward had to step in. “That is not a task that Laura performs. Anna, allow me to summon Harrison to choose the right fellow for the job.”

Laura appeared relieved. There was no chance that Edward was going to stand by and watch Laura be embarrassed in the manner that Anna wanted.

Anna feigned her compunction. “Oh, I’m ever so sorry. I didn’t realize that that wasn’t your station.” Then, she smiled.

“Quite all right, Ma’am.”

Edward intervened. “Laura, why don’t you sit on that bench over there so that you’re close if anyone needs you? You’re allowed to take out your book.”
