Getting into bed, Sarah gazed at the little fire that crackled in her room. The lady was very kind to keep it lit for her while she danced and dined downstairs. Lying on her side, Sarah felt her breathing in her chest move gently up and down. She was relaxed and calm under the Duke of Faversham’s roof—perhaps another indication that her fate had already been sealed.

Once she closed her eyes, all that Sarah could see was the Earl of Buckland’s face. She wished he was the one that had reached out and taken her hand, as the duke had in the hallway. So many scandalous things transpired in one night! Perhaps that’s what balls were intended for. Of course, lords and ladies naturally needed to abide by society’s rules, but it was the most delicious fun when those rules were broken.

Lord Reginald remained in the library for some time, still basking in the memory of his time spent with Lady Sarah. He’d tell the group the following morning that he called off his grand tour in order to spend more time in Hamel. Some logistical issues were pressing upon Reginald’s mind.

If he were to truly take the rouse one step further and remain at the estate, he’d need to procure more clothing—something that could be accomplished if he merely expressed to the duke that he planned on purchasing more attire once in Europe.

Still, the longer Reginald stayed at the estate, the more gaps would need to be filled in his story. And sitting in the library at the end of the night, Reginald concluded it was the first time that evening he even recalled that it was all a story—so real had the new identity become. Reginald wished that it was real. He didn’t want to return to the life of Patrick Day.

Finally exiting the library, the earl located the head footman who escorted Reginald to his room. Once inside, he delighted in the luxurious setting. The valet took care of everything required for Reginald to get into bed, a prospect that was delightful and ridiculous at the same time.

Once in bed, Reginald gazed up at the ceiling and thought of nothing but Lady Sarah Crawford.
