“I see,” Matilda replied. “Is this not the right time now…or is this not the right time forever?” By the end of her words, her face had shifted from disappointment to stone.

“I don’t know.”

“Very well.”

Not looking at her was no longer an option. When their eyes met, hers resembled a rainy sky right before a downpour. That made him realize that maybe he was not making her books out to be fraudulent, but maybe instead, he was just turning into her story’s villain.

Sorry was on the tip of his tongue. The word did not come out. He watched her walk away. That fancy dress she wore would be wasted on a room that she had most likely grown to despise. Aaron was officially someone who was not helping her cause in choosing a life without Charles. He was helping to enable it. But there was no other choice. Leading her on would prove to be fatal in her outlook on life. Breaking her trust would break her trust forever. And that could not be an option. That could not rest on his mind for the remainder of his days.

It wasn’t long before Matilda was out of his line of sight. He did not know how long that would be for. Would she take the hint? Would she be upset? Would she get over it the next day? There were far too many questions than answers.

Aaron could only do what Aaron knew how to do best, and that was to not focus too heavily on the future. Whatever Matilda was going to do, there was no reason to worry about it or ponder the consequences. His time with Matilda needed to remain a memory. He lived in the present, and the present was his work. Even if he truly wanted it to be Matilda.
