He had responded so easily with that, it led Harper to believe that he was telling the truth which didn’t at all excite her. He was still just potentially taking her somewhere because it was his duty, not because it was an action that came from his heart. She grew mad at herself for wanting the latter. She couldn’t break that toxic cycle of expecting things that would surely never arrive.

But then something happened that made her smile. His eyes darted to the left bullishly. She had once read in a book that those who told lies would often look to the left. But at the same time, she also knew Brian’s mannerisms and he only became coy when he was being untruthful. So, did that mean that he actually wanted to take her for his own reasons?

Did it mean that Brian did enjoy her company? It made her almost want to laugh out loud. It was something that she tended to avoid at times, but there was no way around it. Brian showed a sentimental side towards her, one that was ripe with affection, yet she constantly chose to focus on what he wasn’t giving her.

Perception.

Maybe it was time that she focused more on what she did receive from Brian rather than what she didn’t.

“Why are you smiling?” Brian asked.

She had not realised just how big her smile had grown. “No reason. It’s nice weather, that is all.”

“You are a very bad liar, Harper.”

“Certainly not as bad as you.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing at all.”

Finally, Harper landed on an idea that she felt foolish for not thinking of it sooner. Brian had given her enough affection to reveal that at times, he did enjoy being around her. Those moments like at the lake, they could not be ignored. Between them both, they had a lifelong collection of heartfelt memories that could not be replicated by anyone.

The truth of the matter was, somewhere inside Brian were feelings for Harper. Some of those feelings came from friendship and judging from all the kisses, other feelings were romantic. Aside from looking at all the good times together, it was time to try and sway him to be authentic with himself.

He said that he would never love her. A change of perception for Harper would mean looking at that…like a challenge to defeat.
