“Please,” Leah said, still in her seat. “Perhaps we can solve this issue without escalating the situation. Escalating is never good.”

Marianne smiled a devious smile at Harper. “I am only jealous of those who get things that they don’t deserve. If it had been Leah here, I wouldn’t have cared. But you, you have always had everything handed to you. You’ve always been the special one in everyone’s eyes and that makes me sick. You are undeserving of it all and you don’t see it.”

Harper laughed while holding an unwavering stance. It shocked Marianne to an extent. She had never seen Harper so strong in her conviction. She had so much fight in her eyes that it made Marianne wonder if she had underestimated her.

“And so, you think that you deserve the world?” Harper took a few steps towards Marianne. “You think that you deserve gold and jewellery at your feet? For what? Your terrible personality? The way you treat people? The way that you’re fake in your behaviour?”

“You should have never gone for Brian in the first place,” was all Marianne thought to say.

Harper laughed and then suddenly stopped, as is she had realised something profound. “It was you all along. You’re the one that interfered with everything. You were the one making all the scandals happen and for what…because of some misplaced vendetta of jealousy towards me? Really? You’re that jealous of me? Well, guess what, Marianne…you will be me. You will have my life. And if you keep up in your ways…you will never be liked or find a man to marry you. Because love needs to be shared by two people, not just one. And I can’t see anyone ever loving someone like you.”

Marianne grew beyond furious. For a few seconds, she stared right through Harper, and then, she raised her hand to strike her.

Leah let out a short gasp while covering her mouth.

Marianne’s hand was caught in mid-air though. And when she turned around to see who the owner of the hand was, it belonged to Brian.
