That he did. He was both excited and concerned over wherever she was taking him.

After walking past a few rooms and passing a few curious servants, they stopped in the kitchen where she turned to face him. “Before you left for London, I sat here and ate breakfast to avoid you. And I am sorry for that. I never want to do that again. I do care for you, Brian.” She then moved in to kiss him and he felt it throughout his whole body.

The kiss was long and made him think about his future with her. He wanted nothing more but to wake up each morning and have breakfast with her. He wanted to spend every night going to bed right by her side.

When they broke off from their kiss, Harper looked him in his eyes and said, “After everything that you have told me today, I want to always stand by you and help you to overcome your fears. When it comes to love, there is no room for fear.”

“I beg to differ, Harper. If I fear, then I care. I always want to fear losing you, because then I will appreciate the very moment that we are in.”

A tear left Harper’s eye and slid down her cheek. “That’s the loveliest thing anyone has ever said to me.”

“Well, that’s pretty pathetic then, Harper.”

She laughed and pulled him in for a tight hug. Brian hugged her back and never wanted to let go.

Standing there with Harper, he understood his father’s words even more so. Throughout his whole life, he had known pleasure. He had been with women, he had gotten drunk, and he had seen the world and all its many wonders. But there was nothing that compared to standing there and hugging his wife. He would trade all his previous experiences just to have that forever.

She was the little girl in the garden who used to tease him out of love. And she was the same girl who told him that it was okay to be sad after his mother died.

He was the boy who watched after her even when she didn’t need him to do so. He was the same boy that grew up to make sure that her image would not be tarnished.

And there they both stood, despite all their differences and complexities, as husband and wife.

Harper looked at Brian with love in her eyes and said, “I think I want many more nights with a rake before he completely reforms. Can you make that happen?”

Brian laughed and took her to the bedroom where they shared their love as husband and wife.
