Chapter Nine

Saturday mornings are something I use to look forward to but knowing that it’s the last Saturday morning here and that Isabelle is working sucks! She has been picking up so many shifts before she and Jeremy leave for Florida. At least I’ll be out of their hair before they leave. I pack up the rest of my nonessentials and plan out my outfits for the next few days. I have a U-Haul I rented to use for my things, and I’ll be able to tow my car behind it. It’s crazy to look at all my things and realize that I would be fine without taking any of them and still be happy. All I’ve ever wanted was to write and I’m finally making it a reality. Nothing else matters right now.

???

I arrive at the nail salon at our scheduled time and see Ilene outside on her phone. As I’m approaching, I can hear her talking to Maci, explaining to her that drawing on grandpa’s face with sharpie markers is not the same as a makeover. I try to hide my smile but it’s impossible, that kid is the cutest and I love hearing the little mischievous things she does. She is so much like Ilene is crazy.

“Grandpa got a sharpie makeover?” Ilene starts laughing at me and starts shaking her head.

“I swear this kid is my younger self reincarnated into a cute little girl.”

We make our way inside the salon and get seated at the massage chairs for our mani and pedi. The amount of stress I’ve been putting on myself lately has been making me break out. I need to relax and reward myself for getting everything set in time. The bubbles start and it feels so damn good combined with the massaging chair. I must have relaxed to much because I hear a moan escapes out of my mouth.

“Feels that good huh?” I can feel her eyes and smirk on me through my closed eyes.

“Shut up.” We both start laughing and when I open my eyes, I see that Ilene is eyeing the nail tech walking by. Good lord this woman is sex crazed. I nudge my elbow into her arm to get her to stop.

“Could you be any more obvious?”

“What? Don’t act like you don’t look at men now that you’re a free woman.”

“Of course, I do. I actually have a funny story to tell you about my weekend in Baltimore.” Her eyes light up when I say that, and she takes her attention off of sexy nail tech guy.

“Spill right now!” I get close to her and try to talk in the quietest voice I can so other people can’t hear my embarrassing experience.

“I went out to a bar for ladies’ night that Saturday.”

“Wow, I like the way this is starting already. I was expecting you to stay in the whole weekend with a book.” I roll my eyes at her accurate description of what my plans were going to be.

“Well smart ass, I was trying to step out of my comfort zone on my own. Well, I drank a little too much and ended up doing karaoke and…”

Before I can finish, we are interrupted by sexy nail tech and the women doing my nails to see what color we choose. We both hand them our colors and there’s no surprise that Ilene picks red. I feel like she picks it to show that she can be ruthless and it’s the same color as blood. She may be flirty most of the time, but she doesn’t take any shit from anyone. That is part of the reason why I love her so much, but she is so patient with Maci. It’s like she is two different people and you sure as shit want to be on the good side of her. I choose lavender for my color; pastels are my go-to.

“Okay so go on with your story, miss danger.” I know she is mocking me, but I ignore her to go on.

“I sang drunken karaoke and then might have kissed a guy and almost had sex with him.” I said the later so fast I don’t think she even understood what I said.

“Okay you’re going to have to repeat the last part because you ran through that so damn fast.”

I sigh and try to quiet my voice even more before repeating the last part.

“I met a guy and we kissed and…” he eyes grow wide when I say I kissed a complete stranger.

“You did what?” She says that a bit louder than I would like and I put my finger in front of my mouth to shush her.

“It gets worse.” I see a mischievous smile forming on her face, but I wince thinking back to how reckless I was that night.

“Interesting Ms. Dolan, please go on.” I want to punch her for being so smug with this.

“We almost hooked up in the women’s bathroom at the bar.” I lay my head down when I say that in embarrassment, but she doesn’t react.

“Speak up women, I didn’t hear a word you said. Stop whispering.”

“I almost fucked him in the women’s bathroom.”

“You had a one-night stand?” She yells it like she is so shocked that I would do such a thing. I’m so embarrassed that I cover my face in my hands.

“Jesus Ilene, could you have been any louder?” She starts laughing when she realizes people are looking at us now.
