“You don’t understand Janet. Everything has to be perfect or else I’ll hear about it. I want to have fun on my big day not listen to my mother-in-law complain about a flower being out of order or a ruffle in my dress or an empty seat. Can’t you find someone please?”

She was pleading with the last part and as much as I would like to give in and tell her yes, there isn’t anyone to bring with me. I’m not brining my ex-husband who cheated on me, and I don’t have any friends that won’t already be there. Before I can answer her, she starts telling me who I should bring.

“What about Dexter?”

I can tell he heard his name because he turns his attention towards me and looks at the phone and then back at me with a puzzled look.

“Izzy, no.” I say this in a whispered voice.

“Why are you whispering? Are you with someone right now? Oh. My. God. you’re with him right now, aren’t you?”

“Yes, but he can’t come.”

I see a smirk form on Dexter’s face after I say that to Izzy.

“You didn’t even ask him, did you?”

“Izzy, it’s not happening. I’m going to the wedding by myself.” Before Izzy replies, Dexter speaks up and makes me regret answering this call in his car in the first place.

“I’ll go.”

Isabelle is quiet on the other end of the phone, and I slowly look up at his face. He is smiling but also looks nervous. I can tell he is waiting on me to reply to his offer, but I’m not sure what to say.

“Um, you don’t…I mean.” I stutter not knowing what to say to him.Thank you is a good start.

“Well, I’ll let you go and figure out your date stuff. Love you.” Before I can yell at her, she hangs up the phone and its quiet. Dexter breaks the silence once again.

“If you want me to, I can go with you.”

“You would do that? You don’t even know when or where it is.”

“Of course, I would. Isabelle sounded pretty adamant that you have to bring someone…and that someone being me.”

He smiles with the utter most confidence and licks those damn lips. I want to crush my lips into his just to get him to stop doing that. My body reacts in the most inappropriate way when he does that and if I can’t handle just a few minutes with him, how am I going to last the whole night at the wedding with him.

“You heard everything she was saying?”

He starts laughing and I close my eyes and cover my face in embarrassment. I hear his laugh stop and then feel his hands on mine, he moves my hands off my face and looks at me with a pained look.

“Stop doing that.”

“What?”

“Hiding your face and shrinking yourself so people don’t notice you. You are worth noticing Ally!”

I look into his sky of eyes and just let my heart take the lead for once and before I know it, my lips are on his. He doesn’t flinch or push me away. He returns the kiss and when he places his hand on the side on my face I lean into his touch. As much as I want my heart to keep leading, my brain kicks in and tells me to stop this before it goes farther. He is my professor, and I still don’t even know if he has a girlfriend or even worse, a wife. I break the kiss and bring my hand up to my lips and look at him apologetic.

“I-I’m so sorry!”

I get out of the car and walk up to the front door of my place with the rain pouring on me. Dexter opens his door and looks at me and starts walking towards me.

“Don’t, please.”

He stops and just stands there in the rain and I place my forehead on my door before turning around to him. He is breathing heavy and if looks could devour someone, I’d been gulped up in seconds by this man.

“I shouldn’t have done that; we don’t know each other.”

“What do you mean we don’t know each other? You probably know me more than most people.”
