“It really wasn’t that big of deal, just wasn’t sure if you needed them. How long are you in town for?”

I see my mother’s eyebrow raise as she points to the back door. I give her the death glare to not leave me alone with him, but she doesn’t listen.

“I have to go pick up my mess out back, please come in Andrew.”

She opens the door more and lets him in. Sometimes I wish she knew the whole story of us because she wouldn’t be so nice if she knew this man cheated on me twice after we lost our baby. I should be feeling insecure but all I feel is pride in this moment. I’m going for something I’ve wanted for so long and I finally am with someone who supports my dreams. I roll my eyes at my mother and turn back towards Andrew.

“I’m just in town for the weekend, Isabelle’s bachelorette party.” He nods slowly.

“Few more months, right?”

“Yeah, they are getting married in November.”

He smiles and tries to keep the conversation going but all I want to say is thank you and have him leave. My stomach feels nauseous every time I see him now. The flood of memories we have together always invade my head and make me wish for the beginning again. Then I get brought back to reality that he isn’t that man anymore.Dex, think of Dexter! His blue eyes pop into my head and the nausea slowly subsidizes.

“How’s school? I hear you’re still working for Christian.”

“It’s great, I’m loving it. Thankfully he was generous enough to keep me on remotely, but Jasmine is catching on pretty quickly so we will see how much longer I have a job with him.” I see a frown on his face when I say the latter.

“I’m sorry.” I laugh.

“It’s okay, we already talked about me leaving once he had my replacement. I don’t plan on staying there forever so it won’t put a wrench in my plans.” He gives me a half smile like he isn’t sure how to talk to me with all this positive outlook I’m spewing off. It feels good to not second guess myself, for once.

“How’s work with your dad?”

“Busy like always, but great!”

“That’s awesome Andrew.” We both laugh nervously, and I glance down at my watch to check the time. He must see my gesture because he breaks our awkward conversation.

“Well, I suppose I should get going. It was nice to see you and I’m happy that you love school. Maybe I’ll see you around again when you’re back in New York.”

He grabs my hand and squeezes it in a gesture of goodbye, but I can’t help but notice the wedding band still on his finger. He turns and opens the door to leave, when he is off the front porch, I call out to him.

“Andrew…” He turns toward me with curious eyes.

“Yeah?”

“Why do you still wear it?” I see him swallow and his cheeks turn a light shade of pink. He looks down at his hand and looks embarrassed.

“Oh, I must have forgot to take it off before leaving the house today.” I smile and try not to laugh.

“You wear it at home?” He sighs.

“Sometimes, it just feels like going back when I have it on. Like old times, you know?”

My eyes flutter at his confession and it takes a lot to wrangle my brain into not overthinking. He thinks of us at the beginning to.

“Yeah, I know…take care Andrew.”

He smiles and nods as he gets back into his car and pulls away. I can’t help but feel guilty that I still have a place for him in my heart even after everything we have gone through.Dex, oh no.Thinking about my dream man back at home makes me feel even worse. I shouldn’t have those feelings for a man other than my boyfriend! I turn around after closing the door to see my mother in the living room clutching her shirt basically in tears.

“Mom, what’s wrong?” She walks over to me and hugs me.

“Oh, honey.” I’m confused by her emotions right now.

“What?” She backs out of the hug and looks at me.

“He clearly still cares for you Allison.”Is it that clear? Then he shouldn’t have slept with his secretary when we were still married then.I hear my mother gasp and then cover her mouth.
