“I can assure you that I’m not a dream. I’m here waiting for you to come back to me.” I take a sip of my coffee and can feel my heart warm with his words.

“Where have you been all my life?”

“Behind the scenes, waiting for the right time.” My smile is so big, and I can’t contain this feeling in my heart. He’s wanted me this whole time?

“Well, I’m glad that its finally our time!” Izzy makes her way back downstairs dressed and ready to go get Ilene.

“What time are you girls leaving?” I laugh at the perfect timing of his question.

“Right now, actually.” I sigh.

“Okay, text me when you can and make sure you have fun. I miss you.”

My heart picked up pace when he started with “I.” I was waiting for that four-letter word to come next, but I don’t want it to just be thrown around and not mean anything.

“I will, I miss you too.”

I turn to Izzy who has her hand over her heart and has hearts in her eyes. I hang up and shake my head at her with a smile.

“Let’s go get Ilene and get tipsy on wine all day.”

We grab our jackets and head to Ilene’s house.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Making my way to my mother’s house before heading back home for the week has my whole body giddy. I’m not dreading going inside until I pull into the driveway and see my father’s truck parked there. I park the car and open the front door without knocking. I haven’t seen my mother since I got here Thursday and I haven’t seen my father in a month, he hasn’t even sent a simple good luck or I’m proud of you text. I laugh at the latter; I can’t even remember a time that he has said that to me in my whole twenty-five years of living.

“I didn’t even hear the front door open.”

My mother is in the kitchen making dinner and it smells delicious.

“That smells delicious mom.” She smiles at me.

“It’s shepherd’s pie, want to stay for dinner? When’s your flight?”

I smile at her hopefulness, months ago I would have scheduled my flight for earlier in the day to avoid my parents, but I scheduled it for six thirty so I would have time just for this.

“I’m staying for dinner mom. My flight isn’t until six thirty. Do you need help with anything?” I see her eyes light up.

“We just have to set the table.”

I grab the plates and utensils and start to set the table when my father grabs another beer out of the fridge and makes his way back to the living room. I look at my mother when he is gone, and her expression hasn’t changed at all. It’s like they live in the same house but don’t acknowledge each other’s presence. I could never live like that, even when Andrew worked late into the night, I still tried to plan time for us to do things together.

“Mom?”

“Yeah honey?”

“Are you happy?” I see her pause with her hand on the handle of the oven and turn towards me with a smile.

“Of course, I am honey. You’re here even though its only for a few hours.” I sigh.

“That’s not what I mean.”

She opens the oven and grabs the steaming dish of shepherd’s pie and sets it on the placemat in the center of the dining room table. I take my normal seat at the table when she digs the wooden spoon into the dish and sits across from me. She doesn’t answer my question before she calls my father to dinner.

“Jeff, dinners done!”

I can hear my father’s footsteps coming from the living room until he is seated at the end of the table next to both of us. He grabs the wooden spoon first and scoops two heaping piles of food onto his plate. He doesn’t say anything or thank my mother for making dinner. I scoop myself some shepherd’s pie on my plate and take my first bite.
