“Damn, I must be the luckiest guy here at this party to be talking to a future lawyer.” He winks at me with a little smirk.

I'm not sure if this is a power play to try to get me in his bed later or if he is genuinely impressed with my career goals. I don’t tell him that I’m only doing this for my parents since they wanted their only child to be successful. Becoming a writer isn't successful for my family so my dreams are put on the back burner, but if it will make my parents happy then I'm willing to do it.

“I'm going for business, this is my second year, then I'll be working with my father at his business in Syracuse as well.”

We both look at each other and when our eyes meet, I swear I can picture my entire future in that second in his dark brown eyes. We spend the rest of the night talking about our future. We decide to leave the party at eleven and he walks me to my dorm building. Before we say our goodbyes, he asks for my number. I smile at him, and he hands me his phone and I put my number on his phone. I start for the door and give him a little wave of goodnight.

“Goodnight Allison, I'll see you around.”

Not going to lie, I was giddy as hell once I got back to my dorm room and plopped on my bed, but the other side of me was trying to talk myself down. There was no guarantee that Andrew was seriously going to text me at all. Even though I was trying to keep a level head it was extremely hard to get him out of my head.

???

“This place is gorgeous, where did you find it?” I ask Ilene after I put my purse to the side of me.

“I googled fancy brunch around me, and this popped up.” We all laugh because that is how simple we all are, we are too busy with our lives to know if new restaurants have opened in the area.

“I've missed you guys; I feel like I haven't seen you in ages.”

This is more directed towards Ilene because I see Isabelle every day now that I’m staying with her. I look at Ilene waiting for her to respond to Isabelle but when she doesn't say anything I figure this is the best time to tellthem about my email.

“Remember how I told you guys that I was thinking about going back to school?”

“Yeah, of course, I’ve been trying to get you to do it for a while.” says Isabelle.

“Did you finally apply?” Asks Ilene.

I look at them both and can't hold back my smile while I grab my phone and pull up the acceptance email, I read yesterday. I put the phone in front of them both on the table and when they both finish reading they both get up and give me a hug and congratulate me. Then I see Isabelle’s eyebrows scrunch when she sees the date, I received it.

“You found out yesterday and didn’t think to tell me last night?” I laugh and tell her that I was still in shock, and it hasn't sunk in yet that I got in.

“I wasn't expecting you to have an acceptance email, I thought you were going to tell us that you finally applied.” Says Ilene

“I'm so proud of you Al! I know you have been wanting this forever and it's finally coming true.”

Ilene makes eye contact with the waiter, and he heads to our table to get our drink orders, but before we can say anything Ilene orders three mimosa. She shrugswhen we both look at her.

“What? It's time to celebrate you making your big career jump, a little alcohol is in order.” I laugh and shrug my shoulders, it's only twelve but brunch isn't brunch without mimosas.

“So, you start in the fall of this year then,” Isabelle says as she's sipping on her ice water.

“Yes, but I still have to go out there and find a place and a job before school starts.”Izzy can tell that I'm a bit nervous about making sure this whole situation goes smoothly and she puts her hand on top of mine.

“You’ll get it all squared out and I have no doubt you will do great.” I can see a bit of longing in her smile when she realizes that I'll be leaving her to move to a whole different state soon.

Isabelle and Ilene have been my best friends since middle school and have been with me through all my important events, from my first kiss, losing my virgin, to getting married to Andrew, and of course through my divorce. They’re my biggest support system and we have always been there for each other to push each other to accomplish our dreams.

Isabelle has been my friend the longest since seventh grade, but we became closer to Ilene in eighth grade, and we have been inseparable ever since.

Isabelle is a registered nurse at Upstate Hospital and has been with her fiancé since high school. They are soulmates because they fit together like puzzle pieces, and I couldn't be happier for the two of them. Jeremy is a cop for the City of Syracuse. They are both such generous and good-hearted people.

Ilene has always been career driven and I envy that of her. She had her daughter a few years ago with her ex-Stan who we don't mention because he is a piece of garbage. She gave me the most beautiful niece and she is killing it at the single mom job. It's nice to see that throughout our different timeline paths we continued tostay close and continue to thrive.

“So, what's your first book going to be about?”

Ilene asks when the waiter brings back our drinks and sets them on the table. He pulls out his paper and pen and asks if we are ready to order. We all order the soup and salad special to make it a light meal since we will most likely be getting dessert of some sort.

“I haven't thought about that to be honest.”
