“You’re right. By the way, you can use the guestroom and its bathroom to change.”

“Thanks.”

He locked himself in the guestroom to refresh. After donning a white shirt and his navy suit, he carried his tie and settled into a chair in the living room, using the extra time to research a bit more about Russell.

“I’m ready.” Jessica glided toward him on high heels, the perfect professional in a white straight dress and a matching black and white jacket. She’d pulled her hair into a bun and wore only a hint of makeup.

“You look terrific.”

“No, I look the lady lawyer,” she corrected, her chin held high.

“Exactly. Perfect for the occasion.”

As expected, Jessica was right. She received three requests for representation and accepted them all.

“Mr. Kent?”

Tim turned his head toward the burly man approaching him and set his glass on the bar. “Yes, Mr. Malcolm?”

“May I call you Tim?”

“Of course, what can I do for you?”

“First, call me Russell. Secondly, would you have time to visit my home?”

“I’ll make time. Is next week good?”

“Excellent. I’ll count on your discretion.”

“Always.” To be on the safe side, Tim added, “My discretion is guaranteed as long as we’re on the right side of the law.”

“Always.” Russell offered him an approving smile.

After a scrumptious dinner and a lively chat during which he let Jessica shine, Tim thanked his host and shook hands with his prospective client.

“Call me tomorrow,” Russell reminded him.

Tim drove Jessica home and suppressed a sigh when she reminded him, “Don’t forget, you left your laptop in my living room.”

“I’ll walk you upstairs.”

In the living room, she faced him with a triumphant smile. “It was an excellent evening. I got my three clients.”

“Congratulations. Now, you don’t have to worry about your son’s college expenses. I hope you’ll sleep well.”

“I’d sleep even better with you in my bed.” She wrapped her arms around his neck. “You’re part of my plans.” She squeezed herself against him. “You’re all mine for tonight.”

“Nope.Youare not part ofmyplans, Jessica. I helped you when you needed a hand, but that’s all as far as I’m concerned.”

“Come on, Tim. Don’t be a party pooper. Let’s live in the moment. We still need each other, me to celebrate, you, to block all emotions, all memories, your whole past. Let’s enjoy life to the fullest.”

She locked her fingers behind his neck and molded her mouth to his.

He stiffened, squared his shoulders, and clasped her hands, abruptly pulling her away from him but keeping his grip on her fingers.

“Sorry to disappoint you. I’m not in the mood.”

“Why, Tim?” Her mouth tightened in frustration. “I offer you a good romp to relax and forget your pain.”
