It was already eleven a.m. by the time he arrived at the office.

Jessica intercepted him as he opened his door. “Tim, why are you so late? The three new clients added to my previous ones are consuming too much of my time. I count on you to work with me.”

He raised his eyebrows and glared at her. Working with Jessica for a whole week was more than a man should be obliged to suffer. “Forget it. I have my own work to deal with.”

“Please, Tim, you’re so efficient, and I badly need your help,” she pleaded, her lips puckered.

After kissing Erin, he’d become immune to the other woman’s seductive ploys. “No, ma’am. You handle your own clients, and if you can’t do it, tough luck. I’m sure other lawyers will be happy to assume their cases.”

“I can’t believe what I’m hearing.” Hands on her hips, she abandoned her soft performance and confronted him. “You’d have the guts to steal my clients?”

Exasperated by the manipulative woman, he grabbed her shoulders and moved her aside to step into his office. “From now on, it’s every man for himself. Have a productive day.”

Determined not to let her waste his time, he shut the door and locked it. Her new clients didn’t interest him. They would require long hours of routine work she could carry out on her own.

He called Teresa to ask if everything was alright in her household. She showered him with thanks. The kids were at school, the toddlers ready for their lunch, and Erin was asleep after her long shift.

“So all is well. I’ll talk with her later.”

Russell texted him to remind him of dinner at his house, then the CEO stopped by his office.

“Jessica told me you volunteer to work with her on her new cases to get a faster turn-around. That is so generous—”

“No, sir. I’m not running a charity organization for overwhelmed lawyers. If she can’t manage her cases, you can suggest she hires a couple of interns to do her research.”

George burst out laughing. “I agree with you.”

“As for me, I accepted Malcolm’s invitation for this evening.”

“Good luck. This can be a long-term, interesting business.”

At five, he left his office and picked up Brianna from school. “No basketball today?” he asked after hugging her.

“No, Daddy. This is the last week of classes. We will review our lessons, and next week we’ll have exams, and then it’s vacation time.”

Ah damn it, he had only two weeks to organize his daughter’s summer. Maybe find a camp where she could spend her days in a fun way.

“Daddy, did you hear me?”

“Yes, pumpkin.”

“We all need you to help us with math.”

“Ah, okay.”

“Then I want to go to camp with Debbie and Rachelle.”

“Ah, okay.”

“Daddy, stop saying okay. You have to do it.” Brianna had it all figured out.

“Right, right. I’ll talk to Ms. Erin about the summer camp.”

“And tomorrow you should spend the evening at their house and help us with math.”

“Yes, I will. Don’t worry, pumpkin. We’ll brush up on your math, and you’ll all do great.”

“That’s the way to do it, Daddy. I love staying with my friends, but you need to do something for them.”
