“Why not? Are you involved with her?”

“Not exactly, but I try to help out. The poor woman has enough problems working night shifts at the hospital, trying to feed six kids and her mother, unable to pay for her car repair, and more. So I would never try to take what she doesn’t have, just to add it to the bank account of a millionaire.”

Russell leveled a cold stare at him. “That’s a bold statement for a man trying to become my lawyer.”

“It’s an honest statement. I wouldn’t lie to a client who wants to hire my services.”

Russell burst out laughing. “All right, Mr. Kent. I like your bluntness. At least I know you won’t hide things from me.”

“You mean you still want to hire me?”

“More than ever, sir.” Russell stood, his arm stretched.

“My fees are high, and I require a bonus for every successful deal.”

“Agreed.” They shook hands.

During an enjoyable dinner, Russell talked about his business and family. He’d lost a loving wife to cancer ten years earlier. His daughters and sons had moved to the East coast, and he threw himself into his work, increasing his fortune ten-fold. Surprised to hear that Russell headed several charity organizations, Tim promised to get together with his accountant in the coming days.

Back home, Tim called Erin. “How was your shift?”

“Better than expected. Are the cars salvageable?”

“Yes, your van will be ready tomorrow. The mechanic changed the battery and the starter. You shouldn’t have any more problems.” He didn’t mention that he’d had the four tires replaced. “Your mother’s car is another story. It’s too old, and not worth fixing. You should think about trading it for a newer one.”

“I can’t afford a newer one now. Maybe I’ll do it after I get the insurance money.”

“Did they call you?”

“Not yet. They keep saying they’re looking into it.”

“They’re taking too long. You should go there yourself and meet the person in charge.”

“Tomorrow, I’ll leave the twins with mom, and go in the morning.”

“On the contrary, take the twins and Becky with you. Let these people see you have small children and badly need every penny.”

She chuckled. “Sure. If you think it can help.”

“By the way, tell the children I’ll come by this evening and help them brush up on their math skills.”

“Thank you, Tim. They’ll be so relieved.”

Tim didn’t mention his visit to Russell. Erin had enough problems without adding news that her late husband might’ve been involved in shady deals.

The next morning, the mechanic delivered Erin’s car. “You won’t have problems, ma’am, but if it gives you any trouble, call us. It’s covered by a three-year warranty.” He gave her a card.

“How much do I owe you?”

“Mr. Kent took care of it. We regularly service his car.”

“Ah.” There was no way she would let Tim pay for her car repair. She owed him too much already.

When she called him, an auto response informed her he was in a meeting and would call back.

“Mom, now that I have my car back, I’m going to Ben’s company. I’ll pay a visit to the claims department.”
