STEFAN

Today has been gratifying, and I’m glad my parents finally took the gift. Why should they have to struggle? If I can give them just a little bit of help, and pay off their house, it would open them up to another $600 bucks that they won’t have to worry about, and can use on other things. It’s the least I can do after everything they have done for me.

My hair is still wet from the shower, but I don’t let it stop me from getting ready. I’m the weird one that doesn’t like blow drying their hair, it makes it smell burned. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of using something that smells good?

I throw on my jeans and a black t-shirt, because my plans for today are to just hang around my parent’s house, although they don’t want to, and spend some time with them. My mother says she wants me to go and socialize, guess she doesn’t know I do plenty of that at work. Before I met the Haddon’s, I did have a problem with opening up to people, you could call me the shy kid, but Hendrix pushed me out of my shell and I’m all the better for it.

Downstairs, I hear my mother and father talking about me, apparently, they think I’m being too kind. The payoff is nonrefundable so, they can want me to take it back all they want, I can’t. Thank God.

I head down the stairs. “Ma, are you guys seriously still complaining about the house? Just enjoy the extra money and go travel. I promise I’m not missing the money, okay?”

Right now, I have over forty-million dollars in my bank account, probably more, and the thirty-thousand to pay off their house doesn’t even make a dent in that.

“We just don’t like taking money from people, son.”

“I’m not people, and you guys helped me pay my way through college, so think of it as me paying you back for that. I’m sure that was well over the payoff for this place.”

She looks at my dad, and smiles. “Way more than that, but okay. When you put it like that, thank you, son.”

I take a seat on the couch, and pat her on the leg. “I love you guys. You should be out enjoying life, not stuck here working. Retire. It’s time.”

They always hate when I bring that up, and usually it’s a big fight, but with the house off their shoulders, they can afford it. Why do they think I did it?

“We have been talking about it.”

My phone rings and Hendrix’s name is scrolling across my screen.

“What’s going on?”

“Ey, get ready. You’re going to Leslie’s with me.”

What excuse can I use now? It’s obvious that Angela will be there, and my plan was to stay away from her until we leave back to Texas.”

“Nah, I’m staying with my parents today. Have fun,” I reply.

My mom gives me a “don’t you dare” look, and takes the phone from my ear. “He’ll see you in a minute.”

My mother has always meddled in my business, but I love her for it. She just wants what’s best for me, and I can’t blame her for that. Although, I don’t know what her motive is behind this.

“Why would you do that?”

“Because you can go see old friends. No need for you to be stuck here with us watching TV all day,” she responds.

Obviously, I can’t tell her about Angela and me. She has always told me I would end up with one of them. I don’t want her to think it’s more than it is. It can’t be.

I get off the couch and hug her. “You know, after this, I’m coming back to bug you. So don’t get too comfortable, okay?”

She laughs. “Yeah, okay.”

Hendrix’s car is loud enough to where I can hear it pull in the driveway. I really don’t want to go, but my mom ruined that.

I hop in the passenger seat and he smiles. “Did you really expect to get out of this? You know I don’t do family functions by myself.”

One day he is going to have to get over that, unless he finds a girl to take. I’m not going to be his chauffeur every year, just because he wants to intentionally piss off his family. Especially, when all he does is talk about himself, and not once ask about anyone else. I can see why they don’t like him very much, sure they are family, but we all have that one family member, we would rather not talk to, especially in a conversation.

He hasn’t always been like this, but once the company started to blow up, that’s when he changed. The little bit of spotlight boosted his ego, and it’s only gotten worse since then. I’ll never be like him. Money isn’t everything, and my family means way too much to me to just brush them off like he has been. I did this so I could have a better life, and the only reason he did was so he could live rich. See, traveling is my dream, and my main motivator behind Valdon Technologies being successful. If I do this right, once we sell, I’ll never have to work another day in my life.

“Why you so quiet over there? I’m gonna need you to talk when we get there, or things will just be awkward.”
