ANGELA

Lunch at my sisters goes well, surprisingly, until Hendrix asks what my plans are for the rest of the day. Apparently, no one likes the answer. What’s wrong with hanging out at home and relaxing?

“Why don’t you go to Stefan’s? I’m sure his mother would love someone else to spoil with her food?” Hendrix says.

I’m sure Stefan is internally screaming at his best friend right now.

“Oh no, I’m alright.”

Stefan knows that Hendrix is going to demand it, so he pushes the issue. “No, she would love to see you. You shouldn’t be sitting home all alone on Christmas.”

So maybe I’m not against having a dinner with Stefan, but I would rather it be alone, not surrounded by his parents. Especially, his mom who has always asked when Stefan and I were going to get together. Bringing only me might make her suspect, and that is something Stefan wants to stay far away from, or so I thought.

“I guess I could go for some more home-cooked food.”

He is probably asking why I would agree, but I’m not going to make my brother haggle me about it. He just wants to pawn me off on someone else, so that he can go get his freak on with another random girl. We aren’t stupid.

“I didn’t drive, so you’ll need to give us a ride. UBER isn’t running today,” he says to Hendrix.

Of course, he acts so put out, but he literally just asked him to invite me. Why does he have to be such a dick?

I say my goodbyes to Leslie and Noah, and follow the boys out the door.

We get into Hendrix’s over the top car, and I don’t have a choice but to sit in Stefan’s lap, because there isn’t a backseat. Why didn’t he say anything? How is he okay with this? I guess he feels comfortable enough knowing that Stefan knows better, but here I am, basically grinding all over him with every bump in the road. His hands go around my waist to keep me from sliding as we go around a turn, because Hendrix is going way too fast. This might be a fast car, but I don’t want to die today.

“Seriously, slow the fuck down. If we get into an accident, I’m gonna go through the damn windshield.”

He might not take me seriously, and maybe he doesn’t care about himself, but you couldn’t pay me to get back into this car with him after this. When I see his parent’s house, I think that we are in the clear, until he guns it, and a minivan backing out of a driveway, doesn’t even see him.

“Watch out!” I scream, but he isn’t fast enough and he hits her, thankfully his speed has declined some. If we were going full speed, she would have been hurt.

I unbuckle the belt across both me and Stefan and jump out.

“What the fuck were you thinking? You could have hit a fucking child, you idiot!”

The woman hasn’t gotten out of the van, but I'm hopeful she isn’t badly hurt. I run up to the door, and see her sitting there, blood on her forehead. It looks like she hit the steering wheel.

I knock on the window, trying to get her attention. “Ma’am, are you okay?”

Stefan is already on his phone, letting the department know there’s been an accident. Hendrix is going to pay for this. Why is he being so reckless?

She shakes her head, and unbuckles her seatbelt, and then unlocks the door. I move the hair out of her face, and check out the wound.

“I’m a firefighter, ma’am, let me check you out at least.”

She doesn’t budge or fight me on it. Just sits there. Something is wrong, she should be furious, but then I check the backseat.

“There are kids back here!” I scream at Stefan.

Hendrix is still in the car, and I yell at him to get the hell out. He caused this, and he should be helping us.

I open the back door, and there is an infant, and a toddler.

“Hello there, are you okay?” I say, lowering my voice, but gazing over their bodies to see if there is any blood or wounds.

He could have killed this family. Why would he try to go a hundred miles an hour in a neighborhood?

The mother isn’t even speaking, but she’s probably in shock. We had to be going at least almost fifty when our cars collided and spun her around the road.
